Spot on.  I've also found places with the antennas buried in steel racks.

One of the best I've ever seen was at a festival - a guitar rig had wireless guitar receiver and IEM transmitter half-racked together, with the half-wave antennas attached to the backs of the units.  IEM transmit antenna literally rubbing against a receive antenna, and it only failed when they were on a big stage.

Great read!

I think this extends outside of wireless too - it's the old dilemma between failing "gracefully" and failing hard. Personally, I don't think either is bad - graceful failure sure is nice as a last resort, but only as long as the operator is aware of it. Same thing for hard-failure - like you wrote, it forces engineers to be vigilant about failures and disciplined about good system deployment from the get-go. Either way, problems occur when you assume a gracefully-failing system will fail hard, or a hard-failing system will fail gracefully.

The fault, dear Ike, is not in our wireless, but in ourselves.* We actually do want equipment that performs exceedingly well. The real real problem is user ignorance and stupidity error.
