Noob question -- Midas MR18 recording needs?
« on: September 21, 2021, 05:35:46 PM »

I am in my second season of using a Midas MR18 for live shows...still learning.

I use an external router with an HP15 laptop (2.16 Ghz quad-core Pentium running Windows 10) connected via ethernet, and an iPad connected via wifi for controlling the mixer using the factory M-Air edit software.  I am not familiar with the extent of the computer's multitasking capabilities, so I'm asking a noob question concerning recording with it.

Am I likely to be able to record 18-channel multitrack from the mixer's USB port to one of the computer's USB ports while simultaneously running  Audacity and the M-Air software?  I am assuming that I would use an external 1TB USB hard drive dedicated only to recording the audio data, to avoid conflicts over disk usage between program/system needs and audio data needs.  Since there are recording specialists on the board, I am hoping to get a quick seat-of-the-pants estimate of "No way in Hell" or "Don't see why not".  I'm reluctant to do any blind experimenting on my own during a live show!

If I could do it with equipment I already own, I would like to.  If I CAN'T, what would I most likely need to change?

Thanks for any help.

I'm in the "most likely it will be fine" camp. I don't think the control software puts a high demand on processing. Same with recording audio since it's mostly just moving data.

You'll be good to go.

I would recommend using a laptop to just record audio and use the ipad to control the mixer.
It's not because of processing power, just workflow. One machine does each task, if you've got them.

Having an external hard drive is always a good idea, but I imagine that practice is negated by SSD drives and other hard drive advances.

+1 on the ipad for control.  Always best to keep mixer control separate.

I've done it with a 2017 Macbook Pro and had no issues. Recording to Reaper and had the XrEdit app running too. I wasn't really mixing from the laptop, bu the app was open and running. Along with a couple other things I just didn't close out of. I walked around with an iPad.

Bullwinkle: This is the amplifier, which amplifies the sound. This is the Preamplifier which, of course, amplifies the pree's.

I've mixed on a very old Macbook (2008) using the X Air Edit and recorded using Reaper at the same time a few times with no issues.
