that looks like part of the mysterious "range processor" that no one has ever seen except me in a dream.

This has probably been posted before, but have you ever had a really good look at all the markings on a circuit board?
I use to write "Deadly Bozo Voltages" on the unseen side of electrical boxes with a cartoon bozo face.

This one is too true.

That Realistic actually was my first mixer, back in 1986 I believe. Worked fine for making mixtapes and learning how to beat mix vinyl on the 1200s.

My first "mixer" was a realistic, but it only had 4 volume controls.  It had ONE transistor inside.

It did what I needed it to do at the time.

Ivan, I had that same one.

This image is inaccurate, since there is an indicator that tells you if it's on or off.  In reality, you're just supposed to know with no external indicator.

You're misinterpreting. There's an indicator above the word "on" but no indication of what it indicates. Between "on" and "off" there appears to be a switch, but it's in neither the on nor the off position. Maybe it's broken but, like you said, you're just supposed to know.

I had the "Daveco" version of that box, with sliders! My first mixer, too...which I still have, just saw it in my storage unit the other day. I even modded mine to have a low-Z balanced direct out. I'll grab it next time I'm at the storage unit and post some pics.

My first active mixer was a Heathkit:  https://www.nostalgickitscentral.com/heath/products/audio/tm1626.txt  (probably this one)

Before that it was a passive box with some 10K ohm slide pots and ganged micro switches for headphone monitoring.
