AES/EBU testing
« on: August 31, 2021, 09:58:03 AM »

Hi,

I had a Cranesong device, connected through AES to my system processor, that emitted a horrible chirp. During the show of course. Linecheck went fine, first song not so...

We changed to the Allen&Heath SQ5 AES output, and it worked flawlessly for the remainder of the show.

That got me thinking: is there a device that can measure the stability of an AES signal, before I plug it in? Or that can measure the quality of the signal during the show? Thinking about clock stability, output voltage, ...

I always thought that if an AES connection went bad, audio would just stop, but apparently that is not the case...

Charlie.

CTP Systems dBbox3 or dBbox2

https://www.ctpsystems.co.uk/dbbox3.html

Can analyze AES sample rate, status, data errors. Can also listen to or generate AES audio.

I have the older dBbox2 and it is a fantastic tool.

No audio is a common failure mode of digital signals.  However, corrupted digital signals can create some pretty harsh nasties.

In your case, the line check went fine.  If you had tested the lines and they tested fine in line check, but something went wrong after that, well, you're in the same boat as you already were.

Now, if the line check came back and showed things as questionable, but still working, maybe you could have caught and fixed it then.  Hard to say for sure.

+1. I just used those very capabilities the other day to troubleshoot some issues at a studio.

I bought a dBbox3 right when it came out. Such a useful tester.

Thanks a lot!

Would the dBbox3 send the incoming signals thru? In other words, could I leave it inline during the show?

Thanks again!
