What is KARMA???????? and Why??????????
« on: January 11, 2011, 10:57:56 am »

Maybe I'm not up on the latest message board trends but what is "Karma" we seemed to get along without before!

It's just part of the software, some forums have "reputation" instead. Doubt it will happen here (unless we all do it right now!) but some people seem to enjoy whoring out the system to see how much they can get in one direction or the other.

Karma is an attempt to allow readers to cumulatively rate posters, and perhaps apply peer pressure if a posters behavior is out of step with the group. This presumably helps newbies figure out whom to listen to.

Of course trolls would try to maximize their negative count.

I have proposed a variant on this where instead of karma rating on posters, there is a karma count on individual posts, and this could be used to self organize posts for value to the community.

This would require one more data field per post and perhaps not a standard feature of BB databases.

Looking at something along those lines. Not sure if it'd work out or not.

Interesting but short-lived.

Hopefully it will go away.
Prejudicial, high school level popularity contest.
It can be and already has been abused (see Chad Curll's post above). I don't think there are 900 posts on the entire forum yet he has over 900 positive karma counts

I think Chad is making a point, the same way Fletcher has - mods can manipulate their own karma points, which is not exactly good karma!

Just bring over the "Old" Post Count, Someone listening to "JR" with over 10,000 posts will add much Value
to that, vs. "JR" with 7 Posts, that the new reader doesn't  really know.

Regards,  John

P.S. Thanks to the contributers from the old Forum for coming over to this new Forum, We need you.
