What enclosure design software are folks liking these days ?

(1/1)

Mal Brown:
I am not thinking exclusively subs, actually more a two way top.  Kinda maybe a co-ax 12 with a similar 12 underneath it...Would like to be able to model some of that...
I hear hornresp has a brutal learning curve.
WIN/ISD can't do shelf or corner ports well (from what I gather).  I have used it in the past

How is Eminemce Speaker Designer ?

and what else good am I missing ?

Chris Grimshaw:
This stuff is my jam.

Hornresp lets you simulate almost anything, and it's well worth learning IMO. You can do anything from weird bandpass enclosure to tapped horns, transmission lines, etc etc. The only thing more flexible is Akabak, which IIRC you need WinXP to run. Where Hornresp assumes straight ducts with circular cross-sections (an assumption you must factor into your calculations), Akabak can simulate the effect of every fold of something like a tapped horn.

Now, Hornresp also assumes a perfectly pistonic driver, and a baffle without diffraction. These things don't happen in reality. The Edge lets you simulate baffle diffraction and optimise the position of the driver(s) on the baffle.

Finally, XSim is a great passive crossover designer, which lets you import .frd files for the driver as well as "acoustic effects", such as those simulated in The Edge.
You can also use RePhase to create FIR filters

My usual workflow is this:
- Start with design goals
- Use Hornresp to simulate drivers which will be able to achieve those goals. Simulate in 4pi space for flown/stand-mounted speakers.
- Use The Edge to make sure there won't be any serious issues
- Order the drivers
- Build a prototype cab
- Take lots of measurements (I use REW)
- Use XSim to design a passive crossover, or RePhase to design an active crossover with/without FIR filtering
- Take more measurements
- Confirm performance
- Build the final box(es)
- Enjoy.

Hope that's helpful, but feel free to ask any questions.

All the best,
Chris

PS - All the software is freely available online.

May as well take the time to learn hornsrep, you won't be getting plywood anytime soon.

Mal Brown:
last time I bought, there was 12mm void free euro play in stock at close to normal rates.  Now you want 1/2 roof deck or sheathing ?   100 + simoleans  as a sheet.  Think it's down to $72 this week.
