Amps buzzing in a newer venue
« on: August 08, 2021, 01:34:52 PM »

I know this has been discussed but I just wanted to maybe start a thread on what to look for in this situation with main causes and what can be done. I had a friend call me from Fla this weekend from a wedding type venue and had this issue. Maybe make this or start a sticky thread on problems and solutions?
It was only the guitar amps . I was told that they had three prong connectors. All were tube amps
Thanks in advance

Guitars are high impedance, so perhaps a noisy magnetic field from fluorescent lamps?

Of course building wiring is always suspect.

He texted after I posted this. The lights were a big part but it never really went away. Once the lights were dimmed the buzz went to about half. .

Were the guitars plugged in when the buzzing happened, or was it just the amp on its own?

The type of lighting in the venue can make a big difference.  Some LED lights output a huge amount of hash that single coil pickups in guitars can't handle.  Not a whole lot you can do about that short of building a faraday cage around the stage.

Hmm...any neon signs close-by?

If you get dimmer noise in amps, likely there's a bootleg neutral/ground bond someplace.

I bet that's it.

Subpanel feeding the stage?

Neutral/ground bonds away from the power panel (to grab a bootleg ground) are ill-advised and can be dangerous for multiple reasons. Increased chassis ground noise is only one of those several reasons.

Chassis/safety grounds are far from clean audio grounds.

Guitar pickups/amps are high impedance so susceptible to electrical interference (noise).
