Another question about speaker aiming
« on: June 07, 2021, 07:31:44 PM »

Has anyone ever made something for front fills or monitors to kick them up? Trying to find something on the internet, but I think it’s so much easier to find a diamond in the ruff!

A theater I worked in had short pieces of 2x4 that were spray painted black. They wrote "audio log" on them in silver sharpie. Worked pretty good!

We usually use 2x4's covered in black gaff, but who can afford that kind of luxury these days?

You can take two 2x4s about the length of the depth of your speaker and cut a long arc in them.
Place the speaker in the two arcs and you can adjust your angle to suit.

I've used these in the past with good results but it does depend on the speaker and any angle it may have. There is a way to turn it over and get a different angle too. I haven't needed them in years but they did hold up fine for what they were.

Whatever makes you/PM comfortable. Then measure and adjust (or turn off).

The Sweetwater thing might be cheaper than the 2x4 solution nowadays.

Those rubber, wedge-shaped door stops work quite well.

Rubber wheel chocks with grabby bottoms often work for this task if the speaker has an angled back:

Love you Al, but as a stand-alone sentence this one hurts.

If you use two speakers for front fill, would you orient the speakers with the woofers together or the horns?

Normally front fills are a set of speakers along the front edge of the stage, and are not together, so it doesn't matter which way they are oriented. And the level from them should be very low.

Thanks!  I separate them and keep the levels down a bit!

I used to use these:

Many technicians swear that's all they are good for, and cheaper than a log! :-)

Yup.  Every tech should have at least a small inventory of Audio Logs.  They are insanely useful for any number of things.

Absolutely and I use the Audio Logs in flat black for monitor propping, getting subs off the ground, and even to stack and support the trailer so it won't tip back when unhooked.  Funny thing is audiologs.com is taken!

On the Phoenix tour, the lead singer utilized a pair of Clair 12am wedges.  It didn’t look homemade, but there was a piece that would tilt the wedges up to certain degree marks. Didn’t know if someone made this professionally or not? I’m a sound guy not a English major!!! 😜

You can buy adjustable pneumatic legs that recess into the wedges. Maybe Penn or similar has them? Sorry no link to offer but I've seen them in a catalogue.

Cheers

Back when I was in college in the early 00's, I worked overhire on the local crew for several Broadway tours over the years. I don't remember which show this particular story is from, but they had a bunch of ground stacked boxes on each side of the proscenium. I remember them being purple, but I could be wrong about that. I was helping the crew stack boxes, and the touring A1 hopped on top of the stack to do the final aiming. I was on the ground, and he asked me to hand him a few "audio adjustment blocks." I looked into the case and said, "you mean these black painted 2x4 pieces?" I knew the answer, but I wanted him to say yes out loud, and he sounded a little defeated as he did.

Although sometimes I'll use spare DI's in a pinch, I prefer to use 2x4's for that job when needed. I haven't found anything better yet. I sometimes call them Audio Adjustment Blocks and think back to that show. Good memories.

Each of our Southern Thunder Sound systems had an ADAM (Angular Discrepancy Adjustment Module) case, each individual black "ADAM" stenciled in the system color. All the corners of the ADAMs were 1/4" rounded, no sharp edges or slivers.

We only had to point to the case and ask for the requisite number and depth, (.75" or 1.5") of ADAMs required.

In the interest of economy and ecology, I use the 2x3's that Home Depot sells (subject to availability, that is).
