External hard drive
« on: April 16, 2021, 08:28:47 AM »

I need a external hard drive for recording multitrack directly on for an upcoming session.
My MacBook doesn't have enough HDD space for this, we're talking about 40 tracks@48K for a couple of days (rehearsals + show).
Looking for something Thunderbolt 3 or USB-C powered, SSD preferably.

Any ideas?

I use these. I actually run them as main boot drives on some machines as they are faster than the internal drives. Great way to breathe life into an iMac without cracking it open.

[I use a Samsung T5 500GB for this. Very compact (smaller than a credit card IIRC) and fast enough to handle the data throughput.

You'll need to do the maths on how much storage you'll need, or transfer to a large/slow drive periodically.

Maybe something from Glyph if you are going to be recording directly to it..

Also one of the bigger issues that I have had are using usbc adaptors that use the USB2 chipset.. If the machine and drive do not have USBC use a USBC to Thunderbolt adaptor for better transfer speeds.

Years ago I needed an HD as fast as I could get it on a Mac Pro desktop running multiple trax. I went with an empty dual bay external thunderbolt drive, bought 2 SSD drives and configured them in a RAID 0 array. It was fast. Never choked on me and I ran it for 2 or 3 years. I also got a cheap 2 TB external drive for a backup. You should always have backup and drives are obscenely cheap.

Samsung T5 also.  Records multi-track VIDEO with no problems.  I have several 1TB and a 2TB.  Not too expensive.

I have been using SanDisk Extreme Pro for exactly what you stated and also recording video from an ATEM ISO.

They have been flawless.

FWIW, the Department Chair back at school insisted his Recording students buy the OWC external drive(s). Too many others had failures, in his experience.

Samsung T5.  Will do 4k 60FPS video so the audio needs should be easy.

Thanks :)
Looking into Samsung T5, they're reasonable priced and available from my local computer store.
