little headphones
« on: April 10, 2021, 09:19:35 PM »

Hi Folks,

I have been tasked with doing some field recordings on a large tract of land.
Am looking for some easy on/off, tiny, maybe foldable headphones that sound moderately ok,
for use in a tiny recorder, mostly for listening for signal present, and
anything odd in the mix, like an iffy mic cable.
Reasonably sturdy and reliable, optimally under $100.
I have good earbuds for critical listening.
This is the recorder:

    What do you suggest?

Thanks and good health,  Weogo

The point of capture is most important when recording.

Don't cheap out.

Take your good earbuds.

Cheers,
Tim

This is pretty much what I see (and use myself) for location recording.
Get it right in the field and you don't have to "fix it in post"

Yup, 7506s are a standard for on-location monitoring. I've thrown a thick set of earpads on mine and swapped the cable for a TA4F connector, which is lovely.

Otherwise, use a revealing pair of IEMs that you know well.

A set of affordable earbuds, if you're just looking to obvious problems.

I like the Sennheiser HD25II for portability, sturdiness, quality of sound, good cable length and isolation from ambient sound. It is a little over your budget but mine is about 10 years old and still in great condition. I carry it in a gig bag or backpack without a case, it wraps up smaller than the 7506. It is less comfortable than the 7506 but not bad for brief use less than an hour. I have had to replace the ear cushions on my 7506 several times (due to deterioration not wear and tear) but not yet on the HD25. There is a Light version that is within your budget, but I have not seen or used it and can't vouch for its sturdiness.
I agree about the importance of mic location. Headphones with good isolation can be very helpful in choosing the best location. More than once I have found out at home that airflow from a ventilation system or light breeze caused a noise on the recording that I had not noticed while standing there placing the recorder without listening through the mics.
By the way, that Centrance Mixerface recorder looks very nice, it would be great if you could comment on it in another thread.

Hi Tim,

I will be carrying the earbuds if I need the higher audio quality.
My 30 year old Sennheiser HD25-1 headphones are still my reference and
I would rather reserve them for live gigs.
The recorders will be set in the woods/fields/bogs and left alone for a while,
letting wildlife come back to the area and start making sound again.
So no constant monitoring like at a gig.

Kevin and Keith, I also have 7506s.
Am hoping to find something itty bitty as I'll also be carrying a bunch of other equipment.

I had some Koss SP330s that actually sounded pretty good, folded flat and fairly small,
and came in a big case that I didn't use.
But they got little feet at a gig and walked away.

George I will post about the MixerFace after using it a while.

Thanks and good health,  Weogo
