Interesting new product from Shure
« on: March 01, 2023, 12:06:18 PM »

Shure just introduced a new 2.4/5G wireless mic package that has a receiver that can mount on a guitar pedal board. There is not a lot of info right now, but it seems to include a guitar tuner, and maybe the ability to switch between multiple transmitters to facilitate changing instruments. The transmitter is $269 and the pedal board receiver $279.

Looks a good upgrade to the recently discontinued glxd systems -  having the 5G option is a step forward.   I assume the switching between packs is simply powering on the one you are using at the time.  The previous 2.4Ghz only version pairs up and is ready to use in seconds.
It will be interesting to see if it automatically switches between 2.4 and 5 or whether that has to be done manually (not that I would ever use 2.4 given the option).

This might be a first, never seen a dual band system. Also the 5 band is usually a shorter range? Wonder how the range is on these things if they switch between the bands...

It's going to be similar to WIFI.  Realistic maximum working conditions of 2.4ghz is about 150 feet, 6ghz networks I usually assume max working distances of 50 feet or less, with no obstructions in the way.

In the case of the digital pedal board, range shouldn't be an issue as there shouldn't be any obstructions to worry about.  For a mic moving about the stage, it starts to be a bit more of a concern as you get further from the receiver and can end up hiding behind obstructions.

Comparing to WIFI is tough because with audio, you NEED real time transmission.  For things like watching a video, your computer can buffer a few seconds of data and if the stream gets interrupted or slows for a second, it's no big deal as it can catch back up.  Real time audio doesn't get this buffer ability so the data stream MUST be there and on time.  Any interruptions will result in audible problems.

But, the newest WIFI technology is leaps and bounds ahead of what was available just a few short years ago.  It's to the point where some of these systems can be realistically considered as options for limited use.

But this isn't WiFi. It uses the unlicensed frequency bands that WiFi operates in, but it is not a network data connection, AFAIK it is a digital signal carried on a carrier in that band.

Yes, it's probably not WIFI exactly, but it's going to be using similar technologies, scanning and swapping frequencies as needed.  Since it's playing in the WIFI spectrum, it certainly better know how to handle a flood of WIFI requests.
General practices for WIFI implementation can be followed using these devices. The same RF rules apply, and again, any interruption in the data stream doesn't have much buffer to work with to correct itself.

It's still something I would be somewhat concerned with implementing on a mission critical show because it doesn't take a whole lot for a rogue device to wipe out that entire spectrum.  Yes, rogue devices can take out ANY wireless device, and a device that auto-hops frequencies can potentially run away from problems easier than a targeted attack on your known one frequency, but most people don't carry devices that can attack mics outside of the WIFI frequencies in their pockets like they do with their phones.

my concern would be the auto pairing feature.  When I had some GLXD systems (for about 3 weeks) a major issue was dropping out then taking a second or two to reconnect.  A split second drop out is annoying-a couple seconds is a deal breaker every time.

Similar to Line 6 RF1 scheme?
