Beyer M201 mic - opinions?
« on: March 07, 2021, 01:44:39 PM »

This mic looks interesting.

I like my old M88. It is the only Beyer mic I own.

Application is live sound [when that happens again]. Most of the reviews I have found pertain more to recording. Uses I have read include snare, guitar amps, even HH and OHD.

Currently use E906, SM57, B57A, MD421 - 70/80s version.

I bought 2 M201's early last year, but I haven't had a good opportunity to actually try them on anything yet. Go figure.

They're a little heavy compared to a typical condenser of similar size, but lighter than a 57. I think they'll be great for some things. I'm looking forward to trying them on snare and hat, especially, and probably horns too.

I have four and use them instead of SM57s on drums and percussive instruments where I need a dynamic mic.
Sounds good and tolerate a lot of SPL.

I believe the m201 is the mic that Jonathan Richman from The Modern Lovers (and There's Something About Mary)  used for years as his live vocal mic. He liked that it had very little tone difference as he moved away from it and from side to side. Prior to that, I had only seen them used for snare top.

M201s are fantastic mics. Excellent sound, decent pattern control, reasonably compact. If you're not bothered about extended LF pickup, they're a great general-purpose microphone. I'd take them over SM57s every time.

Sounds like a nice microphone!

I have one on the way to try it.

I found this funny quote by engineer Steve Albini "If the SM57 were a microphone, it would sound like this".

Thanks all.

I suspect you'll be very pleased.

Mine have been used on all the usual suspects (cabs, brass, various unpronounceable stringed instruments) with routinely excellent results. Even had one as an emergency vocal mic - just put some foam over the end. It was the last mic in the box. Once the proximity effect was EQ'd down, it sounded great. I kinda want to come up with a grille that magnetically clips on for vocal use.

The hypercardioid pattern can really come in handy.  Clearer than a 57.  I am right now regretting selling mine.

Your fine selection of dynamic mics is now even better. They excel in most applications where you'd use a dynamic mic.
