I find HPF useless for correcting proximity effect. A low shelf cut rolling off between 500Hz and 1kHz works better. I generally cut about 5dB by default even before hearing the singers. It's easy enough to raise or lower it as needed, but I pretty much always end up with it at about -5dB for singers on the grille. This is with SM58s.

Maybe it's just now shown on the SM58 spec sheet, but the frequency response at 1, 2 and 1/8th in.  Suppose I'll order both and see which one works better.

The proximity effect for SM58 is similar to the Beta 58A, but Shure no longer posts those curves.
The Beta58A is hypercardioid, and has a bit less "working distance" than the SM58. It has more output due to the neo magnet structure, so requires a bit less gain from the board.

The Beta 57A windscreen is about 1/8" shorter than the Beta 58A, so one can get a bit more output from it.

I've had this discussion before on another thread, but as far as I'm concerned the reason you find an HPF useless for correcting for proximity effect is because it's the wrong tool for the job.

{...} The Beta58A is hypercardioid, and has a bit less "working distance" than the SM58. {...}

It will also be less forgiving of bad microphone technique, since microphone angle becomes more important with increased directionality.

I would also recommend giving the Shure sm86 a try.
