Jerry Granelli, a musician who many of you probably never heard of, but almost certainly have heard, died Tuesday in Halifax, NS.  He played drums with the Vince Guaraldi Trio when they recorded what became the soundtrack for A Charlie Brown Christmas in 1965.  Jerry was ambivalent about the recording for most of his life, partly because despite its success, he made less than $100 for the session.  But his attitude softened later in life, and he took the show on the road for several Christmas seasons.  I shot the accompanying photo on a concert that we recorded and shot video of, in my previous career, back in 2014.

From ZZ Top fb page:

"We are saddened by the news today that our Compadre, Dusty Hill, has passed away in his sleep at home in Houston, TX.  We, along with legions of ZZ Top fans around the world, will miss your steadfast presence, your good nature and enduring commitment to providing that monumental bottom to the ‘Top'. We will forever be connected to that "Blues Shuffle in C.”
You will be missed greatly, amigo.

Dusty Hill, ZZ Top.   That Lil Ole Band From Texas, same lineup for 52 years.

Hope he gets in a few more rounds of Beer Drinkin' and Hell Raisin'.

Ron Popiel, the guy who popularized TV-pitched products of dubious worth (Mr Microphone, anyone, or the Popiel Pocket Fisherman?) has gone to backorder status at age 86.

Johnny Ventura, a much beloved Dominican singer, passed yesterday from a heart attack at age 81. He was one of the greatest proponents of the merengue, national dance of the Dominican Republic, recorded over 100 albums and won 6 Latin Grammys during his career. After achieving great success as a merengue singer and bandleader, he went to law school, graduated summa cum laude, and later was elected mayor of Santo Domingo, capital city of the Dominican Republic. After that he kept performing until very recently. Here he is performing in a local restaurant Mamajuana in New Jersey at age 78.

Always responsive to his audience, at the end of one of his merengue hits Patacon Pisao, he spontaneously jumps into a ranchera for the Mexicans in the crowd.

Here he is in a bigger venue, also in 2018.

He will be missed by millions. RIP. QEPD.

Tim Bogert, a legendary bassist best known as part of the bands Vanilla Fudge, Cactus and the trio Beck, Bogert & Appice, has died. He was 76.

The very first rock concert I attended, Cactus opened for Ted Nugent.
