Fanless / Silent LED washes?
« on: December 30, 2020, 01:24:05 PM »

Greetings and Happy Holidays!

I put a set of Blizzard Hotbox EXAs into an installation earlier this year.  They've yet to be used for a live performance due to Covid restrictions, and the space has pivoted to video and web-cast type events.   The fans in these fixtures are the dominant noise source in the space, and the owner would like to replace them.

So, I'm looking for recommendations for a similar, but silent, fixture:  Compact size, RGB + Amber and/or White color mixing, silent operation, ideally at an economical price point.  Any Suggestions?

Thanks!

ETC Colorsource PAR. RGBLime, but it works much better for video. No fans, no noise at all.

However, if you really want to do video studio lighting well you'll use LED panels such as the ETC fos/4 line of panels. There are also many cheaper cool/warm white panels from many manufacturers that were designed from the ground up for video use.

The ETC ColorSource PAR is very quiet, but it does have a fan.

Chauvet Colorado Solo series.
RGBW with a programmable zoom.
The zoom makes it a very versatile fixture.

+1 on lights designed specifically for video use.  Having good CRI and properly timed flicker is very important for quality video work.  You'll get what you pay for though. The el cheapo stuff isn't really 'designed' for video. It just looks like it is. :)

If you are looking for something at a lower price point, many DJ grade IP 65 rated fixtures don't have fans and are dead quiet. I doubt if you will find anything at the Blizzard Hotbox price point but there are some that function well and not too much more.

"24.8 dBa average at 1 m"

I didn't even realize it had a fan, and I've used a dozen of mine in a small TV studio before.

For wash lights, our Chauvet EVEP130RGB's don't have fans, and we're happy with them:

Since others were talking PAR's, we have 6 Chauvet Color Dash Par 18's which don't have fans, and we're happy with them:

We're in a church setting, so we really notice the lights that do have loud fans.

Hi Peter, at the bottom of the price/performance totem pole I have some ADJ Mega Hex Pars that are okay.  They're by no means professional quality but they're silent and work well for truss lighting and eye candy...and are a good deal at under $100/unit.  The Chauvet SlimPAR Pro H is significantly better but another "notch" up in the price point.  They're good value though and aside from truss warming and eye candy are the cheapest units I'd consider acceptable for use in generic professional applications.

There are many options in the Chauvet Pro and Elation catalog, but now you're in shopping in the $500-900/unit price point - far beyond the Hotboxes you're looking to swap out.  Hope this helps!
