In a dielectric vessel in a microwave oven ;)   I confess, this is what I do, at least for small quantities. --Frank

But doesn't the microwave take all the flavor out of the water? :o

Only if you scorch the water.

Depending on the locale that might not be such a bad thing  8)

Speaking of water and coffee, an explanation I heard for why water has a strong influence on the taste of coffee is that some dissolved minerals, such as calcium carbonate, react with the acids in the coffee making it more to people's liking. So "hard" water, while often not so good on its own, can make good coffee.

We have public water supplies in Kansas that rival Arizona - "One lump or two?" is the question about the water, not the sugar, when it comes out of the faucet as a mineral stream.

My coffee maker has an activated charcoal water filter.  I have a Brita Container (supposed to go in the fridge) that I use for my drinking and cooking water as Wichita water has swimming pool levels of chlorination.  It may not remove the minerals but at least it doesn't smell like a natatorium.

Trigger warning: this will offend the coffee snob.. -- *ahem* I mean connosewe... conoswear... cornforssuuuuEEEEE!... (wait, we're not calling pigs, are we?) OK, coffee snobs -- out there.

Here's my father-in-law's recipe for coffee:

  • Get the cheapest can of coffee grounds HyVee sells
  • Brew a pot in the drip coffeemaker
  • Let that which you don't drink cool off
  • When you want another cup, pour some room-temperature coffee out of the pot in your cup and microwave it until it's hot
  • Repeat process when pot is empty

I'm not a coffee drinker, but even I can sympathize with you. At least he makes it strong enough so you can't see through it.

I put my folgers instant in the cup. I put tap dance water in the cup. I do not stir it. I put it in the microwave until it just starts to boil. I take it out and stir it(no shakin it). I put my generic french vanilla slim fast in. I drink it. It really good.

What I do seem to remember (despite drinking neither tea nor coffee) is that water for coffee should be ~20°C below boiling (100°C) yet tea should be made with water straight off the boil (and no reboiling already boiled water for that matter).

To that effect I have not had any complaints about the quality of my cups/pots of tea yet so I must be doing something right!
