I always LOVE it when one stagehand heads out to his car to get a pair of vice grips so he can release a speakon connector...

This thread is a stealth IATSE advert isn't it?   ::)

No one is perfect, but I will say that I've definitely been tasked with fixing connectors as a local IA hand; never broken any to my knowledge. :D

Not destructive, but we were doing a tear down after a wedding and our new kid helper disappeared.
Half way through he shows up all proud saying he just taught himself out how to over-under.
I don't let the help wrap cables, so I can't say I was happy, as we had to do all the grunt work while he was gone.

Well, I did start my comment with the phrase "No one is perfect" for a reason. :)

I think there is a certain amount of "you get what you pay for", though. Economics would suggest that a labour pool competing primarily on price will likely provide an inferior service to a labour pool competing primarily on skill...

Same gig, as my latches, one stagehand took every XLR out of the sub snake and left the shells in. Her response was well I thought tomorrow you'd know where to plug them back in... OMG!!!!
Other than drummers "forgetting" sticks and cymbals, I actually had a bass player forget his axe.
Go figure....
Ever had anyone try to twist out an EP-4? Now THAT was a robust connector.
As to stage hands, no one but me or a trusted accomplice gets to plug/unplug anything.
Forget "helping" me with mic cables. Drop each one in it's own pile, and I'll wrap them myself, thank you very much.

This show was a IATSE show. I know most of these guys, and have even hired most of them to work for me at some point in time... And trust me they make good $$$

one who couldn't figure out the latch on XLR panel so they unscrewed every back shell from the cable and left the shells sitting in the panel.

I always thought that those were urban legend stories till I ran into that myself a few years ago at a school and church.

For what it's worth the shells were not stuck in the connectors as cheap knock off's can do.
I don't know how often they set up the system at the school but at the church it was a weekly set up
in screwing and unscrewing the XLR boots.
It got quiet when I showed them how to unplug the connector.

Had a drummer forget half of his kit, he rounded up the parts and pieces at the local music store.
Another forgot his drum rug and then unloaded the trunk of his car to use the trunk mat for a drum rug.

Maybe that was after somebody else forced it in backwards!

Sadly, I've seen that happen.
