Mark Brunner,  Vice President of Corporate and Government Relations at Shure Incorporated, passed away this morning from yet to be announced cause, though I understand it was not Covid-19 related. Mark had been with Shure since 1989.

Mark, along with Joe Ciaudelli from Sennheiser and Karl Winkler from Lectrosonics, was instrumental in getting FCC to provide some levels of protection for wireless microphone operations and expanding license eligibility beginning in 2004 when the approval of whitespace devices and the 700MHz auction were set in stone. If not for the efforts of Mark and Joe, the wireless microphone landscape today would be hell.

Mark was a terrific guy who was personable, sharp, and extremely well versed in both government bureaucracy and pro audio audio workflows. He had many friends inside and outside this industry, and will be missed greatly. And he was far too young.

I'm posting this in the Wireless forum for now, but will eventually move to the 2020 RIP thread to join all the others who deserve remembrance by our little corner of the world.

My heart was torn out when I learned that Mark left us today.  What a wonderful friend he was to all audio people, but especially American RF Technicians.  He fought the good fight and faced the FCC behemoth on our behalf, with fearless passion and righteous brilliance of mind and spirit.

We lost a hero this morning.

May he rest in peace after a life well lived.

Wow, this is devastating news. I last saw Mark at NAMM, in January when we were on a spectrum update panel. He was a great guy and he will be missed.

I'm both stunned and gutted by this. This year was the first time I got to work with Mark, although I'd asked questions at previous AES Conventions of the various RF panels where he was always a helpful and knowledgeable presence.

As this year's Co-Chair of the Sound Reinforcement Track with Henry, and also being able to do some level of video editing, I helped behind the scenes of the RF panel and got to listen to him repeatedly while editing the video. He extemporaneously talked through the state of where we are with the governmental regulations and the spectrum, and I was struck with how coherent and organized his thoughts were and how he, Karl, and Joe really took us on a journey through the complexities of the subject.

We are planning some form of tribute to his memory and work, and I would think we should be able to provide some way for people here to see that.

The entire presentation including the planned tribute is an On-Demand video at the Convention the last week of this month, meaning that if you are registered for the Technical Papers part you can watch it anytime you want during the Convention and, I believe, after for some period of time.

My condolences to his family and to those here who knew him well.

Thanks for posting this, Henry. Mark was "the man" when it came to knowledge of the FCC inner workings, the auctions, and everything else involved. He, together with Shure's legal team, and as you mention, Joe Ciaudelli and Sennheiser, were the key figures in protecting our spectrum to the best of our ability. Without them, we would be even more in a world of hurt than we already are.

I got to know Mark over the years as a gentleman and a statesman. He was a true audio guy like the rest of us, and worked for Shure for several decades - nearly 30 years if I remember correctly. Mark was personable and professional, and I always enjoyed our time together, whether on a panel, or just catching up on our lives, at some trade show somewhere in the world.

Mark's departure leaves a huge hole. I'm grateful for everything he did, and will always remember him fondly.
