Isocab woes, a Darker Mic?
« on: July 09, 2020, 05:30:10 PM »

Question for the mic guru's.

When I have a guitar player, where the amp tone is "pokey" in the upper mids, I really love using a Cascade Fathead; it smooths out the top end.

However being a ribbon with a figure 8 the Fathead does not love small-ISO cabs (not that anything loves those...  ;) ).

Any ideas?

1) Are there any dynamic mics that have a dark ribbon like tone?
2) Are there any modern (for sale now) directional ribbons which are under say $300 new?
3) Any other ideas? (other than a careful application of gasoline to the Isocab...)

Thanks

Matthias

Larger cab with more absorption?  Mic with strong rear rejection (such as Heil PR30?) and then light EQ to taste?

I like iso cabs and haven't had issues with them.  Most that I've used have been easily large enough for a 4x12 or 2x12 combo, lots of absorption, and good mics (E906, various condensers, various dynamics, even a couple ribbons).  All needed some tone-shaping EQ.  Not a fan of SM57's, they make that upper mid area even worse.

Is the cab large enough to play with double mics and especially placement options?  Are there any closets within a couple hundred feet that you can use Radial SGI and use the whole closet area?

I don't know of any modern directional ribbon in that price range, but you can get a new Beyerdynamic M160 for not much more than that if you look around. I just got a couple, and while I haven't had a chance to use them too much yet, I think they'll sound really nice.

You might also think about an SM7 though. They tend to pretty dark sounding, so it might do the trick. They're gain hungry, but they work really well, especially you're hitting them with enough level or using a level booster.

Got room for an RE20?  New ones are a tad over your price point, though.

Just what I was thinking. You might find a used older one.

I always say get it right from the source. If you have an iso cab, you can EQ as needed from the amp. Start there and then do what you can with mic placement followed lastly by channel strip eq. You are looking for an expensive solution to a free user problem. If you CAN'T fix it from the source and mic placement along with channel strip eq won't cure what ails you, then use a different mic selection from your arsenal first. I wouldn't look to throw money at a problem as the first option. Heck even placing a piece of foam or some form of a beam blocker may help soften the HF blow? Exhaust your cheap, easy and readily available solutions before spending money.

Isocabs fix one problem, but depending on the size may introduce others. Don't know if your isocab has a secure mic mount or a useless gooseneck, but using the mic you have try moving it to aim at different parts of the speaker - on the cap, off the cap, at an angle. You'll radically change your EQ with just mic placement before having to reach for another mic or console EQ.

Now if you have a gooseneck or limited room to move the mic around it's another issue.

Is it your IsoCab or the guitar players? what speaker is in there?
