Greetings!
I have a wide, shallow stage in a ~250 seat room. Right now the sub is 1 Tannoy VNET 218DR LIVE, which sounds great, but takes up too much space. I love how good this sub sounds in both peak output and low frequency extension. The stage is only 12”high and the sub is sitting on the stage a bit off center. I would like to replace it with 2 subs which I’ll place on the R and L ends of the stage.
I’m looking at 2 of the JBL VRX918sp but would love to hear suggestions. I’ve mixed on these and gotten good results. They are within my budget.
I do not need:
Light weight
Flying rigging
Networking

I do need:
Powered
Small
Goes deep
Black

Small and goes deep don't go together, unless you give up a lot of SPL.

Bassboss SSP118 or 215

What is the ceiling?  Whenever a stage is too short to put subs under, my first thought is to fly it/them.  Better coverage and time alignment with the mains. 

Why self-powered?  Seems like you're painting yourself out of some of the best options, such as a single Danley TH118XL.

I did wonder.

However, I think the inverse square law would be a problem - those nearest the sub will get loads of bass, while those at the far side of the room will wonder why the kick isn't mic'd.

All great points and suggestions. I’ll look into those options. The ceiling is too low to possibly fly the Tannoy sub.  It is fairly tall. Flying new subs could possibly work.

I really wanted to put the one sub that I have on one side of the stage, but the real world results are as Chris described.

Danley TH212 is only 15" tall, yet performs like your current sub.
