T-band auction still in play?
« on: July 07, 2020, 12:56:22 PM »

This showed up in the FCC digest:
https://docs.fcc.gov/public/attachments/FCC-20-89A1.pdf

Ends with a statement from one of the commissioners saying it's a bad idea, but they're stuck doing it so far.

FCC has no choice but to follow through as if the auction will occur. It's up to Congress to repeal those sections of Title VI of the MIDDLE CLASS TAX RELIEF AND JOB
CREATION ACT OF 2012 that mandate the auction. No one at the FCC or the GAO believes it will be successful or that there's sufficient and appropriate spectrum for to which public safety can move. Congress will likely act on the eve of the scheduled auction.

It's a potential mess, and certainly a waste of regulators' time and energy.

Good news I guess.

Well, it happened far sooner than I expected: As one of the many provisions in the congressional bill the Senate passed late last night was the repeal of the T-Band auction scheduled for next year. So whereas we no longer have to worry about that spectrum going mostly to broadband use, the FCC’s moratorium on new LMR licenses in T-Band [markets] will be lifted very shortly so there may be more LMR licenses coming.

See PDF page 5322 (Bill pg 2855), Line 6;
https://rules.house.gov/sites/democrats.rules.house.gov/files/BILLS-116HR133SA-RCP-116-68.pdf

Now all we need are events in which to actually use the spectrum . . .

Henry ... did you stay up all night reading 5600 pages? ;)

I see there is also $300million for rural broadband which I expect mostly goes towards the Microsoft Whitespace plan.
