More input Please...
« on: July 04, 2020, 08:47:48 AM »

Hello,
First off Happy 4th. July!
Thanks for the helpful info on my maybe toasted Dbx 260.
Any thoughts on a service source that would worth sending it to?
Of course the thought comes to mind, that it might not be worth the cost?...
Would like to talk to someone in the know.

Next, thinking of buying a Midas mr 18, is that still a good choice?
Why is there such a range of asking prices on these?
On the bay they go from 6-12 hundred!
The Tribe will sell a refurb. for $630!

What's wrong with this picture?

The XR/MR18s have seen a strange surge in price recently with so many people staying home and starting video channels and podcasts and a bunch of other stuff. I found a similar situation to what you describe when I bought my XR18 about 6 weeks ago.  Probably spent more for it than I should have, but I needed it when I needed it.

All that being said, it's been totally worth having and now that I also have 2 CL5s in my studio, I find I still use the XR18 as my primary "Zoom Call" utility machine so that I can free up my CL5s for show/demo/testing work.

I've been perfectly happy with my XR, but I will say that the self noise level of the mic pres is not great.  A channel with nothing plugged into it will show a significant amount of signal on the input meters if its gain is wound up a bit.  Perfectly fine for my use, but I will concede that there is likely a difference in that department when you step up to the MR.
