Prosumer DigiMixers malfunctions
« on: July 01, 2020, 04:28:54 am »

Not meant as a flame throwing post.
Inspired by the recent Lab Lounge posting of UI24r Issues, I thought it an opportune time to share a personal observation, and pose a question, about the aforementioned product model, as well as other comparable prosumer digital mixer brands & models produced, sold, and deployed during this era of the the recent 8 years, specifically referring to all of Presonus StudioLive variants, Mackie DL originals & recents, B/M X/M32&Air, A&H,QU/SQ/, Soundcraft SI/UI/Impact, QSC Touchmix, and Yamaha TF.
In my observation, drawn from and culled over the years of cruising & pursuing manufacturer, user, and topic forums, FB & YT groups, pages, videos, and retail vendor user comments & reviews, that this one brand, model line, and particular model number, the UI24R, appears to have a larger number of hardware issues relative to other brands and models, even while accounting for and excluding user/pilot error deficiencies as part of the aggregate sum.
In comparison, the 8 year old, and highest global sales record X/M32 line appears to pale in hardware related issues contrasted against the 3 year old & far lower sales UI24R, as evidenced with the variety and number of issues posted on the UI24R FB public page alone.
Examples are the Mackie DL1608, but in particular the DL32R, is infamous for internal ribbon cable issues. The Behringer X32 channel 15/16 intermittent signal/noise. The Soundcraft SI/Impact power supply fix. Point being, identifiable, repeatable, repairable, even if temporarily until necessary again.
The reporting on the UI24R anomalies seemingly is often unidentifiable, unrepeatable, and unfortunately without a secure fix.
So to a question I pose. By way of members knowledge and possible end-user experience, how fare the aforementioned brands/ models in regards to known hardware issues/fixes, firmware/software updates, but excluding pilot errors when possible? Cheers

My experience:

Mackie DL1608 - used this mixer for ~2 years.  Never a single hardware issue.  Some connectivity issues which we always simple to troubleshoot and solve.  Was a solid platform for me.

B/M X32 platform (Two X32 Racks, One X32 Core, One S16, One DL16) - been using X32 Rack since the first day they were available for purchase.  Only issue I've ever had is 2 XLRs cables getting stuck.  Although inconvenient, simple enough solve via YouTube vids.
I have had maybe 2 'boot ups' where the S16 was not connected to X32 Core.  A quick reboot of the box solved it.  Other than that, I have had zero issues with hardware or software.  Some inconvenience in regards to iPad app bugs, but those were also solved and there were work-arounds.  I will also note that my X32 Rack (in a 10 space rack with 2 Crown iTech amps) took a roll off a 2.5' stage and landed hard.  I took the X32 Rack apart to look for any breakage or cables out of place...but everything looked fine.  Have been gigging with that 'dropped' X32 Rack every weekend since that happened (at least 3 years ago).  These have been rock solid.

Well, https://www.facebook.com/behringer/photos/a.10152059078118914/10158582433538914/?type=3&theater

For those of us who don't "FaceSpace", what does it show?

I can't comment on the Allen-Heath or Soundcraft mixers but out of 6 M32/X32, we've had exactly 1 failure over 6 years, and it was a failure of an internal component and required shipping to the Music CARE facility... Covered under warranty (was just under 3 years old) and Music Group picked up shipping both ways.

Sorry but I call bull.... on that statement.

The simple truth is that the UI-24 has been bought by many users as their first digital mixer and having been a member of the facebook group almost since its inception I can say that the majority of issues are not in fact hardware related. There have been very few actual hardware failure that were not pilot induced.

The vast majority of complaints are based in un-realistic expectations as to what the on board wifi limitations are.  Same problems you see with the XR-18...

I have observed a couple of over heating incidents - then a pic of a fully stuffed rack with no air gaps.

I have heard of a few with poorly seated ribbon cables. The input board is apparently one that is susceptible.

Very few reports of hardware issues that required a trip back to the factory is what I have observed.

IME - my 2 units have been rock solid.  Once I understood the limits of the integrated wifi and turned it off.

Midas M32R, DL16 and Behringer S16 zero issues. Desk roughly 3 years, DL16/S16 roughly 2.
