Problems with Shure QLXD4 and UA844 combo.
« on: May 28, 2020, 09:11:32 AM »

I have a problem with four Shure QLXD4 and UA844 combo.

Sometimes when I turn on the UA844 (from one to several minutes) I can hear a relay clicking and the light in the power button on one ore more of the receivers goes out. When this happens the blue light indicating the pilot tone does not come on so there is no connection between transmitter and receiver.

I can restart the receiver by using the on/off switch on the receiver or the splitter.
Sometimes it works, other times one or more of the other receivers gets the same problem which leads to a new restart and then it works for the whole arrangement.

I upgraded the firmware on Monday and after restarting one of the receivers stopped working.
After restart everything worked just fine on Tuesday (small meeting).
Will check again tomorrow.

The importer has never heard about this problem so they will check with Shure.

Just curious, have anyone else experienced this?

Are you powering the QLXD receivers from the 844? It sounds like there might be a power supply issue in the 844. If so, you could try powering the receivers off of their wall wart supplies and see if you get different results. If that's the case, you need to get the 844 fixed.

Which power supply are you using with the UA844? Shure makes a few different wall-warts that are the correct voltage and will physically plug into the unit, but not all of them are capable of providing enough power for the UA844 and for RXs.

The receivers are powered from the 844. I´ll see if I can find the PSU for the receivers.

I am using the original PSU that came with the UA844.

Update:
Shure has been contacted, they have never heard about this problem before.

These pictures are taken within 5 minutes of each other.
There is a restart (power cycling) between each picture.

After this I upgraded the firmware, restarted and receiver #2 disconnected.
New restart and everything seems to work as normal. I will check on Monday, am I lucky or not?

Looking at the displays it seems to me that they are all having their normal power.
It´s just the light in the power button of the affected receiver that is missing.

Since it's a strange problem.  I never go out without backup power supplies - keep the spare PSU in the rack with the splitter and QLXD receivers so it's right there if needed.

Whatever the outcome, investing in a second power supply will net you a backup and may also solve the problem in which case you would then want warranty if still applicable or just buy another one for a backup.

Very good advice, thanks. I will dig out the spare PSU from the storage.

This wireless system was installed in a venue in 2017, working perfectly until sometime late last year.
The system has been powered on for the last three days and they were all connected this afternoon.
I switched them off so I´ll let them cool down for some days before I try again.

Before you ask, the rack is very well ventilated.

The next thing to do is to send the serial numbers to Shure as requested, so we´ll see....

Electronics can be strange - sometimes you get a "cold start" problem - after it warms up it's fine and so on.

Yes, rack ventilation is important - especially with power amps.
