"That's just, like, your opinion, man" - Video Series
« on: April 24, 2020, 04:54:40 PM »

Hey all -

I'm posting this in Education Opportunities because i genuinely hope there will be an opportunity in this project to learn something.

I'm also hoping that it'l be Fun and we can help build some Community.  :)

I'm looking for volunteers for a video series i'm creating focused on Audio called "That's just, like, your opinion, man". The objective is to have interesting and fun discussions about things we DON'T agree on, 'cause who doesn't love a cage match? :)  It's also an opportunity to hopefully better understand WHY we do what we do, regardless of where we fall on the debate.

The intent is to have fairly short Zoom conversations [30 minutes or so] on topics that are going to be VERY specific.  Examples include things like:

 - Snare bottom mic? Yes or No?

 - Let's talk about "bass tilt" in the PA

 - Aux fed subs.  Yes or no?

 - Channel on/off or Mute?

 - 48k or 96k? or 192?

 - etc., etc.

Only Qualifications are :

1. You've pushed an audio fader up and/or down on a live event of any kind. All experience levels welcome.
2. A willingness to disagree with others and have some fun doing it.

[EDIT:  I'm serious about the above.  If you've got a pulse and have touched a fader, you're in.  My hope is to have a mixture of experience levels so we can all learn from each other.  Some of the most educational exchanges i've had of late have been from people 30 years younger than me who are looking at something with a fresh set of eyes]

This is going to be a fun [hopefully] project with very little time commitment.

If this interests you, Please send me your Name and an Email to my Email address in my sig line below so i can put you on the list.  I'll be sending out more details in the next day or two.

And if this doesn't interest you, PLEASE FEEL FREE TO SHARE this invite with anyone that you think MIGHT be interested. I'd LOVE to have people outside my normal circle of peeps participating.

Thanks!

[Mods: obviously move this if should go somewhere else.  :)]

Thanks for the thread bump, Chris.  :)

Yup, still running.  NO plans to stop any time soon. Having too much fun!

Show title is now "The Audio Opinion Show". We stream live on YouTube twice a week; Tuesdays at 1p EDT and Thursdays at 8p EDT.

Here's a link to my channel to see past shows. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC64dlcpfld8SVt_zjGDMxIQ?

It's a Zoom event. No need for a Zoom account or anything to participate. I email out a registration link during the day before the show.

There's a virtual "waiting room" that opens an hour before show time. I "open doors" at 30 minutes before show and close them at 5 minutes before so we can get settled in for the show. [All of this is mostly done to prevent zoom bombers from ruining all the fun]

I love having active participants on the panel, but I'm also starting to get a few people who join us and just hang out in the chat rather than having to be on video/audio and that's fine with me too.

If this sounds like fun to you, please just send me a note [my email is in my sig] and I'd be happy to add you to the list. The more the merrier!

Thanks

As much as I'd love to be associated with Practical Show Tech, I am not. But anyone that hasn't gone to PST and checked out the amazing amount of training resources there already, then GO THERE RIGHT NOW!

You can find my show on my YouTube channel Brian Maddox Talks

Always happy to get subscriptions and suggestions for more and better content, so please feel free to share!

Cool, thanks for the links. You should have an email.
Wish I'd found this thread earlier - I have some thoughts on SM58s* and snare bottom mics** :)

* e935s are better in every way except widespread use
** Need time alignment to work properly - inverting polarity is a band-aid.

The good news is that no topic is ever really "exhausted". I fully expect to be revisiting all these things again.

now just to add "best kick drum mic" to the list...  :)
