Help! Dante Device Name changing randomly back to default
« on: April 15, 2020, 02:41:05 AM »

Dante Audinate Question, help needed!

Hello,

I was just wondering if anyone might be able to point us in the right  direction, we've got a fairly simple network setup and everything is  talking/working as expected, however, we've changed the names of some of  the devices and it appears to randomly remove the names and put them  back to default, thus removing all the routes made in Dante controller. I'm talking about the physical device name, opposed the channel names.

When this happens, in the events log we get a notification saying "Exbox  MD-16c1e4 - Elevation to grand master" however we had this device  selected previously as the "master clock" with "sync to external" as it's clocking to MADI. I'm assuming we get this notification as the name has changed.

Any thoughts on what could be causing this? I've never had a network  that appears to be working correctly, to randomly loose the device naming.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Dan

PS - Devices in use:
1x Mac mini running DVS
1x Windows PC running DVS
3x ExBox MD
1x Allen & Heath SQ5

My recollection is that, while devices can be renamed in Dante Controller, the device itself is responsible for remembering its own name. When the names revert to defaults, are all devices doing this, or just some/one of them?

Also, the standard Dante troubleshooting questions:
  • Is Dante Controller up to date?
  • Is the firmware (including the Dante firmware) in your devices up to date?
  • Is DVS up to date?

Echo everything Russell said about updating hardware and software.

Adding:
Some manufacturers implement additional control within their own proprietary software.

So you may need to change the name in both Dante Controller and their app.

Hi,

Same thing just happened to me on a Dante AVIO: Device name just reset itself to default without a reason...

All other movements on the Dante VLAN at the time (some minutes before) was we unplugged a computer port (Apple MBP running Dante Via).

I'll share more details and photos when I can connect my Dante Controller computer to the internet.

Cheers,

Some more data:

Subscriptions to the original name (AVIO-MODULO) are still showing green checkmark even though device name is now default (AVIOUSB-51bdba).

Audio still flowing, same as before - did suffer short interruption when name changed, and I know this because I was looking at Dante Controller and saw it all happen under my eyes. I've pointed in the picture old and new device names and audio Mute and Un-Mute times.

Some network insight: 2 Gigacore switches (1 FOH, 1 backstage) with primary and secondary VLANs, connected together via 2 fiber trunks (ISL).  Dante Leader clock (GMCA elected) is on a Shure ULXD device backstage. AVIO device was on the same switch.

This jumps out at me as being extra weird. Two questions:
  • Have you tried power-cycling the computer running Dante Controller?
  • Have you tried power-cycling the device?
