The Dark Day
« on: March 12, 2020, 06:49:01 PM »

Hi PSW friends and colleagues,

This is a repost from my Facebook page, and it comes straight from my heart to all of my worldwide brothers and sisters in the biz, as my best attempt at encouragement, positive thinking, fellowship, and, umm basically, love.

The Dark Day

Place the ghost light center stage, friends. I hope we may strike it soon.

Today will long be remembered in our beloved entertainment industry.  It's among the darkest days in my more than 30 years in professional show biz.  The very darkest, beyond black, were of course those that followed September 11, 2001.  We will never forget.

I suspect that March 12, 2020 may come to be known as "The Dark Day".  Most of us who toil behind the curtain will appreciate the many connotations that the moniker carries, and hopefully can someday chuckle about it as inside we mourn all of the dark days in our lives.

Just as we brought light and color and joyful noise back to our stages following 9/11, we will again fill the eyes and ears of our audiences with wondrous and joyful sensations.  The show must go on.

It will.

Right on man ! We will get through this , today hit my business very hard. Major cancellations into the next several weeks and months.

Timing could probably not have been worse as I have a kid on the way and just re invested into a complete inventory overhaul ... lesson learned yet again ... calendar looked fantastic .... now ... well .... you know the rest.

Let's hope we get through this safely and get back to work as soon as we can.

Be safe guys

Great words from Jason, it's a tough time and still searching for answers.  Like Nick we had a great year last year and invested heavily in new gear and more importantly people.  We have two full time employees now, well did.  I just came back meeting with both of them.  We are going to do 20 hour shop weeks for the next 3 weeks and see what happens.  Anybody can buy gear, recruiting and developing talent and watching a team grow around you is an indescribable joy.  I feel as if I have failed these young men, who put their faith in me.

+1.

Well-said and well-written.

We must keep hope alive even during this dark time, in which we are entering a very uncertain world where we are threatened by an invisible enemy with uncertain weaknesses, while we are hindered by inadequate preparation, inadequate supplies, inadequate knowledge, and inadequate and venal leadership from the top on a scale never seen before in our history.

We must do what we can according to our resources and abilities, and look forward to the time when this is behind us and we have eliminated or overcome our current inadequacies. Even though our putative leader has announced that he takes no responsibility, we must and I believe we will as a group step up and do what needs to be done.

Although the current situation and our resources to fight it are not encouraging at all, with work, patience, and cooperation we will get through it together and we will get back to some condition approaching normal. I hope.

Although I'm very small time compared to most here it really is a tough time all around. It is heart breaking to see what is going on and how it effects everyone. With a single source business there really is no way to switch over to a different area to recoup the loss.   For me in the United States I hope our government realizes this is as bad as any weather natural disaster and businesses should be compensated as such. Its one thing to make bad business choices and not make it. It is completely different when things are fine and have the rug pulled out from under you. When I read post where people are upgrading and growing, and more importantly adding employees sharing in their good fortune to have it gone by something that we can't control hits hard.
Hopefully when this runs its course there will be a big demand for shows as people will want to get out and celebrate the end of this. Hanging on until then I'm sure will be tough.

Take care of your families;

You can't bear responsibility for a pandemic, Scott.  IMHO, you are to be commended for trying to keep staff on at least part time and maintaining your inventory during this down time.  I have heard of other companies doing wholesale layoffs.

Looking forward to better days,
Dave

Agreed.  Most employers quickly forget that part time is better than no time.

I feel sorry about the freelancers. As one local artist put it. "We lost half of a year of income in fifteen minutes".
