The FCC is at it again!

Beware, wireless microphone users.  They continue to chip away at our protections provided by their rules.  IMHO, chairman Pai won't rest until all of our usable spectrum has gone to the highest bidders.

"Specifically, Chairman Pai is proposing to permit higher transmit power and higher antennas for fixed white space devices in rural areas.  If adopted, these changes would allow white space devices to reach users at greater distances, thus enabling improved broadband coverage.  Higher power would also enable signals to better penetrate foliage, buildings, and other obstacles.  Additionally, his proposal would permit higher power mobile operations within geo-fenced areas and proposes rule revisions to facilitate the development of new and innovative narrowband Internet of Things-based services."

This is more sad news on an already depressing day.

Your humble opinion seems like the most accurate portrayal of the ongoing situation with spectrum. It's a wonder that none of them seem to connect that this wireless microphone that they're using at their town halls or whatever doesn't exist in a vacuum. I don't get it at all.

The real protagonist in this effort is Microsoft, and like most big companies with money and high powered lobbyists, they're voice influences regulators and legislatures. This a two year effort on their part. Shure, NAB and others have been putting up a valiant effort to minimize the impact of this, but we have to wait and see what the NPRM actually says to see how effective our pleadings were.

For us laymen, what frequencies would this affect? We're about to add several more channels to our inventory but don't want to buy into a segment that could quickly become unviable.

WSD's operate in the core TV bands and the 657-663 MHz portion of the 600MHz duplex gap.

It's not that the spectrum will become unavailable, it's that this proposal permits these co-channel part 15 devices to operate at higher power levels and elevations, and in high speed movement (car, bus), than currently.

Oh yeah, I get that they're not going away (at least hopefully), but I don't want to buy into a wireless band that might become even more crowded thanks to this.

All bands available to us will get more crowded if the commission continues on its current course of eroding its rules regarding WSD.  That's the point of our industry's objections to higher power limits on WSD.

The Microsoft Airband Program is already operating in 16 states. They have already committed $13B to providing broadband in rural areas by broadcasting in available white space.
