Rane MIA
« on: January 27, 2020, 02:32:27 PM »

Has Rane completely disappeared off the face of the earth?
I've been unable to find any repair options for a piece of equipment
that I own.

Thanks for any enlightenment anyone can offer.

I believe they were purchased by a distributor (? InMusic) for their popular DJ mixers, the rest of RANE is apparently excess baggage.

The bad news is they stopped hosting the Rane Notes reference pages that were a great industry resource.

I contacted them a few weeks ago about permission to host the old Rane references but no answer.

If that is the case (I have no reason to doubt you), it is truly sad.

Having used a good bit of Rane gear, it always did a good job for me.

Agreed, the Rane notes are something not to be lost to "corporate takeovers".

One of the guys on our AES local committee the last few years but not now was an engineer for Rane before and after the takeover, and he said IRRC that they kept the engineering staff on and indicated they were secure, but sometime last year fired all of them.

Sad indeed, hope the Notes are able to be hosted somewhere.

This came up on the SynAudCon list just a few days ago. The good news is that the Rane notes are still a thing. Here's the scoop on that, a direct quote from the SAC list:
"Rane was sold to InMusic in July of 2016. RaneNotes are now the property of InMusic.

Dennis Bohn, who was one of Rane's owners and creator of the "PAR" (Professional Audio Reference), donated the PAR to AES along with other reference lists he created (Pro Audio Company Names, Pro Audio Reference Books and Pro Audio Style Guide)and did not include this intellectual property in the sale of the company to InMusic. He wanted to assure that these documents continued to be living documents which would be updated and kept current and most importantly, would continue to be available to anyone who is interested in learning.

That's mainly a glossary. That glossary contains dead links to the RaneNotes. For an example, see the entry for "dynamics controllers."

Thanks for that, Brian!

Ah, the Wayback Machine!  Note that the aggregate document: Rane Notes Collection - Acrobat reports the file is damaged.

Going a bit off topic, is RANE solely doing DJ products? Did they exit the pro audio market?

Would seem that way, their website only list 5! current products, 3 mixers, a serato controller and a USB AI.

Is https://www.ranecommercial.com/ not them?

The do seem to have some of the white papers: https://www.ranecommercial.com/kb.php

They also seem to have all of the old data sheets: https://www.ranecommercial.com/legacy/oldman.html

Yes, Rane had an entire commercial audio division. Separate reps and everything. Marshank was the most recent rep firm out west. lots of Cobranet, AVB and Dante amps and matrix mixers and such.

Looking at it Rane Commercial seem to be separate from the DJ part completely, this division of InMusic called Rane Contractor, and bundled with Denon and Marantz Professional.
