U891R pin-out?
« on: January 27, 2020, 07:55:17 PM »

I'd like to assemble a couple of cables for AT U891R/C boundary mics, and am asking if anyone might have a pin-out they could share with me?  I intend to terminate to standard 3 pin MXLR.

Have you misplaced the included cable? Should be straight-through. Pin 1 = Pin 1, Pin 2 = Pin 2, Pin 3 = Pin 3.

Never had the cables... the mics were included in a lot I bought years ago... I'm just getting to the bottom of another to-do pile.  From what I can tell it's wired case ground... so pin #1 of the 5-pin Female mic connector likely wouldn't go the pin #1 of the MXLR cord end.

SHOULD be a 3-pin TA3M on the mic. It's not?

That mic model has a multi function switch and the extra connections are for switch contact outputs.
They also made the same mic without the switch that used a TAF3 on the cable.

I think I have one of them in a box of leftovers, I'll dig it out and take look.

I'm sure a quick call to AT would answer the question.

Great Mike!  Near as I can best determine, it's seemingly likely pin 1 GND, pin 4 neg, pin 5 pos.  But of-course a confirmation is frosting on the cake.

My seeing ear dog says the Quickie Start:

https://www.audio-technica.com/cms/resource_library/literature/a4af95a3c70ebfa4/u891rcb_qsg_142316290_v1_11l_web_181016.pdf

Might have some value if they use the same colors inside the case, as with the accessory cable.  Very bottom right corner of the PDF.

The cable might be an available accessory but I didn't see a part number for it in the mic's literature.

Very bottom right corner of the PDF.
Tim:  That's what I was going off of:  The wiring diagram in that PDF... I presume they listed it in sequential order, as I'd think an engineer wouldn't stand for their numbers feng shui being all mixed up out of order... so I'm presuming:
1) Black-GND
2) White-LED control (unused for 3-pin XLR)
3) Blue-Contact (unused for 3-pin XLR)
4) Red-Cold
5) Yellow-Hot

So I have my cable assembled: TA5F on one end, MXLR on the other.  Now I've got my test bench box mixer tore-up on the bench going after fixing it's defunct phantom power circuit I swapped the board out of to fix a customer's same model box mixer "awhile ago"... I don't want to admit when (where's that facepalm icon?)
