CL5/ RIO select inputs quiet on start up?
« on: November 09, 2019, 03:42:53 pm »

Hello all-

I work as a mixing engineer for a musical theatre house. We run a Yamaha CL5 with a pair of RIOs and a TIO, Sennheiser 5012, D6000, and Shure ULX-D wireless. All Dante devices are run through a semi-managed network switch. A handful of times over the last year or so, on system start up, all wireless come through the system substantially bellow level.

The most recent time this error occurred, the process went thus: Initial system boot up sequence preformed. RIO housing all wireless (and only wireless) displayed a sync error (both green a orange lights). System reboot preformed. Sync error cleared. All peripherals come through correctly (inputs off the TIO and CL5 omni ins). All wireless present but approximately 12Db quieter. Unable to determine if volume decrease incurred on the in or the out. Power cycle preformed on CL5 and wireless RIO. No sync error present. All Ins/Outs at correct level.

The issue only happens on or directly following start up; that is to say, it does not ever drop out on extended use.

Has anyone experienced this or a similar issue or have any idea what the cause or remedy might be?

Sounds like it's a Resume/Refresh setting issue on the Rio.  Is it possible that the Rio is set to Refresh, and patched to the desk but not actually *mounted* on the Dante Setup page?

Are all the radios patched via analog into the Rio? Or only the 5012 Txs? If analog, is the Rio in refresh or resume mode? If analog, and refresh, and the control connection to the CL faults for some reason, input gain will be at a minimum.

Other than than, its hard to offer specific advice with such a general overview of the signal path, beyond making sure to follow fault finding best practise next time it occurs until you locate the origin.

It does not sound characteristic of a Dante fault per se, however.

when you power-on/reboot the system - is your "semi-managed network switch" also powering on?  or does it remain 'always on'?

I've found and measured network switches that take 3-4 minutes to fully power-up and start passing Dante information (audio & control) - regardless of signal/traffic indicators on their ports.

if the mixer and other Dante devices power-on and are trying to connect before the switch is able to send/manage that information then sync errors can show themselves.

it seems that the last power-up you mentioned in your post was Dante devices only - not the switch - and everything came up without issue.
