Repack from TV's point of view.
« on: November 04, 2019, 12:14:29 PM »

This was touched on at the RF Super session at AES last month is NY. Seems like there are a lot of STAs (special temporary authority) out there to keep everyone on their toes.

WOW!
And we thought RF in our industry was problematic!

Although it did mean that in the UK a lot of broadcast kit came up for sale at auction,  a lot of it used temporarily so they could re-engineer some sites. One notable auction lot was a 1,000ft temporary guyed mast! Buyer to dismantle though.
Just think what the cost of all this moving around is, esp. as some installations were done for DSO and as such are pretty new, plus an antenna array designed for the higher channels is not suited to the lower channels (I.e. CH59 changing to CH30).

Here's just one quote from this article: “We’ve had to go with side-mount antennas and low-power transmitters—five kW—at some sites. I’m sure that we, and other broadcasters, never envisioned temporary antenna systems going on for very long, but here we are.”
I think this reinforces a point that I've made elsewhere: That we won't really know what the post re-pack RF landscape is going to look like until at least a year after the July 2020 deadline.
Another point: The article repeatedly mentions the shortage of skilled workers, like tower crews, helicopter crews etc. as well as backlog at the relevant equipment manufacturers (Towers, antennas, transmission lines etc). What it DOESN'T mention is that the demand for all of those resources is not just being driven by TV stations meeting their re-pack obligations, it is ALSO being driven by the cellular suppliers who need to have towers built, installed and connected to their networks, all over North America.

Since I find the FCC website about as much fun as stumbling around in an unfamiliar hotel room in the dark, I'll ask here.  Is there an easy way to find which stations in my area are operating with an STA?

https://www.rabbitears.info/

This site has a good search function and will tell you repack status, you can then look at each station and see if it has an STA.
A little clunky, but much easier for me to navigate than the FCC site.

This is the one I find really useful on RabbitEars:
https://www.rabbitears.info/repack387.php
Hover your mouse over the check or X boxes with box around them for detailed info and notes.
