CTIA/AHJ 3.5mm plugs
« on: October 21, 2019, 02:34:58 PM »

Anyone know a place that sells these? Looking for some quality ones with metal shells.
Most that I have found online have ground connected to shield. I’m looking for ones following the CTIA/AHJ standard with ground (and case) connected to R2.

Neutrik doesn’t seem to have one and I didn’t see a SC one either.

Have you looked at Mouser?  They seem to have everything in the world. ::)

Yeah, theirs have the same issue that the other "common" ones have, not built for CTIA/AHJ wiring.

I'm not even sure if such a beast exists...

Hey Pete;

Have you gotten one of these, and can confirm the shell is connected to R2, not sleeve?

So far, I've never seen one that was built "as I feel it should be".

The conductors are named, from Tip to Shell:
Tip
Ring 1
Ring 2
Sleeve

Sleeve on any normal connection is ground, attached to the shell. The CTIA/AHJ standard, used on all Apple Products and all modern notebooks has the Sleeve connected to Mic+. Ring 2 (R2) is connected to ground. A metal shell on any 3.5mm TRRS connectors I've seen would then also connect to the Mic+. Likely causing a hum when you grip the connector, and certainly not offering any shielding.

Maybe it would be worth hacking up an old set of Apple earbuds to find out which is actually implemented?

Electret mic w/ built-in FET means low impedance and high level. It probably just works.

I expect because they're all plastic connectors, the shell is moot. I'd like a more robust connector using a metal shell. I may just be out of luck!

I'd probably put some shrink over it if that's the case.  Not ideal but it'd work.

Good workaround!
I expect I'm probably out of luck on finding what I would consider a "properly wired" metal shell connector anyway.

I got a few TRRS plugs from Markertek and those all had the sleeve/mic connection tied to the shell.
That did not cause any issues for the breakout and adapter cables I made, I did put heat shrink on the connector though.

Thanks, Mike.

I've resigned myself to the fact that there are not any connectors made the way I'd like, so I'll have to suck it up and do that as well.

Cheers!

The added issue...  a "robust" metal connector will not likely fit into the case holes for the devices we're often using these plugs with.  We need slim connectors (and probably no shrink tubing) or connectors with a significant "shelf" or "step" that allows them to plug down into those phone and ipad cases.
Of course, it won't be long till we're using bluetooth for all of these kinds of things.  That will have it's own challenges...
