Simple Compression
« on: October 12, 2019, 03:40:25 PM »

So long shot, haven't found anything, but are there any passive 1 knob compressors that can just plug directly into an insert?

Have a 166xl which is all well and good if I want to haul the outboard rack, but for just a single mic application it would be nice to have something to do a bit of limiting when someone shouts into a mic unexpectedly.

And ya ya, get a digital mixer...but not looking to replace my mixer right now.

DBX 163X perhaps?

Or maybe a dbx goRack?
It’s “based” on a dbx 163.

Should be cheap used.

I used to have an SPL DynaMaxx that sounded amazing and was super simple to use. 3 knobs, compression, gain, and gate. And did I mention that it sounded amazing? They don't make them anymore, of course, but it looks like you can still fine them out there sometimes.

If I could go back and get one piece of analog gear that I'd sold, that would probably be the one. Not that I'd probably ever use it, but still.

If by that you mean the same as in loudspeaker terminology, ie no power supply at all, then no, there are none AFAIK.
If you just want something smaller and more convenient than your current FX rack but can still live with plugging in a power cord of some type, then the Rolls 151, Behringer Shark and FMR RNC are some of the most compact you'll get.

David.

Yeah, was hoping no power supply of any sort...but seems no such thing exists. Is that because it's not actually possible to build a compression circuit without external power? Or just that nobody has made one? It would be cool to just plug a tiny little box with the 1/4" insert plug hard wired as part of it (think like a usb stick, how it's one entire unit, no cables), into the insert and have a knob of compression (inserts are on the top of my mixer, so it would just be in the channel strip).

Either way, some interesting suggestions. The goRack looks nice but I can't find one easily available for purchase, the 163x is just a rack unit really. The Rolls unit seems to have bad reviews out there. Funny enough, the Shark is actually well reviewed and could be a handy tool for other purposes (ie. for delay speakers). The FMR unit looks to be hard to get up here in Canada. The DynaMaxx is again just a rack unit.

I could also just separately rack my 166xl and bring that I suppose.

Just be careful of its infinite automatic makeup gain. It's annoying as heck to me. Might fit other applications tho.

You could make one?

Not really passive, could devise a circuit that converts phantom power for use tho?

here's a passive one I found. Kinda cool.

There's some things very wrong with that circuit, starting with the input level control wired backwards...

I can't see this one doing anything but clipping the waveform. I expect massive distortion would be the result.

I'm curious how this one (attached) would work, it could get it's power from phantom most likely.

Yeah, some interesting circuits...phantom power would only really work if it was in line with the mic rather than on the insert. Completely passive would be ideal.

I unfortunately don't have the knowledge to put together any sort of circuits like these, although a good friend of mine might....I'll have to run the idea by him and see what he thinks.
