So... The Vertex stuff is WAY cheaper than the CP. The quality of the Vertex seems pretty good, so what's the catch?
The catch is that since taking over 100% control of Vertex a several years ago, M has culled any Vertex products that might cannibalize M brand sales, real or perceived. The result is the remaining Vertex offerings are somewhat below that of the "business" line of M branded products. How much below? Depends on your needs.
If you want to remain in the analog world only (which I don't recommend), the CP185 arguably buys you a bit more ruggedness over the VX-2xx series and about par with the VX-4xx. Arguably, the analog audio components (mic element, pre-amp circuit, speaker amp and speaker transducer) in the CP185 might be a bit better. If you don't apply a "golden ears" analysis, the VX-4xx is quite a good radio for the money.
Given that it's wiser to buy into a digital capable radio, even if you don't program in any digital channels now, the vote goes to the CP200d. The Vertex EVX is using some combination of sub par mic element, mic pre-amp, speaker amplifier and/or speaker transducer and sounds pretty disheartening; The CP200d definitely wins here, and in ruggedness.
If you're not wedded to the Mother brand, I suggest you look at the Hytera PD4 & PD5 series if you want DMR, the mid tier Icom for NXDN, and Kenwood NX-3000 series for combination NXDN and DMR (and analog of course). Lots of other great offerings from reputable manufacturers than just "M".
