Thanks everyone for your responses.  it was great to hear everyone's perspective on this.  It sounds like the mesh heads might be the best compromise.

Right now the drummer doesn't sing and doesn't have a monitor pointed at him.  With the mesh heads would it be best to have the drummer wear in-ear monitors, or just use a standard floor monitor?

Ears if possible. You could do a hardwired body pack to save cost.

Remember, a floor monitor would need to be capable of producing all the drum sounds to be heard on stage. Kick, snare, toms, ect. The rest of the band will need to hear the drums too.

The drummer I often work with uses the Roland TD30 module along with a Roland personal monitor. It works pretty well. I'm able to take 4 separate outputs. kick, snare, toms and cymbals. Which gives me the ability to mix them separately out front and also in each monitor mix.

***I've tried to get him using in-ears a couple of times, but he prefers a wedge.

The drummer I mentioned uses a hardwired IEM pack - Behringer P1 ( ~$50) and non-expensive single driver ears. IEM is by far the best way to go for a good result and the hardwired option is SO affordable - cheaper than a stage monitor. Drummers, keyboard players and anyone else who doesn't require wireless for movement can go the hard wired route

Back in the 90's we were doing a lot of local festivals. Think small town celebrations. Early in the day was usually local bands on stage and many were somebody's kids garage band. First time in front of a crowd. Many times the kick sounded like someone hitting a bag of laundry with a baseball bat. We would use an Alesis D4 triggered by an aux send or insert to trigger a kick sample and bring that back on another input.  Blend to taste.
We received several compliments about how good the kit sounded. Shhh!

I've used a 50hz tone with a side chained gate triggered by the kick channel to get the same effect. No one has ever had a clue what was going on; and the reactions from drummers in the audience have sometimes been comical. "OMG dude, you should hear your kick drum out here!"
