Dreaming of less kick drum.......
« on: September 11, 2019, 08:28:22 AM »

Attended typical big name 80-90 rock band show last night. Typical fairgrounds venue.

Once again the bass drum was the featured instrument for all 3 bands. And I was in the cheap seats, far enough back from the subs to hear the actual mix.  And the thump level was actually not too bad, it was the "click" that was way out of proportion with the rest of the mix.

I was able to move around the venue and confirm it was like that everywhere including FOH.

When will the kick drum madness end?

It just so happens that I've just sent an article to LSI on the subject of kick drum mics.

I haven't used a conventional-choice (Beta-52a, D6, etc) mic for years, instead preferring something that's nice and flat. I haven't had one person say it sounds bad, but quite a few that wanted to know what I was using.

An SM-58, so the crowd will sing the kick drum part while exiting!

I think you'd enjoy my mixes then :)

While a powerful kick sound is fun, I don't often mix it that loud for most parts of a set. I just want the headroom for when a song does get loud and I artistically mix the kick & bass in for some good time fun ;)

I've just returned from a few days in Austin. The best sound in the smaller clubs had no subs or hardly  any kick. The worst sound was an outdoor venue with a Zydeco band, yes a Zydeco band with way too muck kick!

Someone please stop this madness!

I mixed a Beach Boys tribute band last weekend. They said they like a "powerful" kick and low end out front. None of these guys were under 60.

I use a Beta52 on the lead singer to get the crowd dancing to the vocal.

I guess they never really listened to any original Beach Boys recordings.

If I'm doing a BB tribute, VOCALS are the star, not the kit.
Just sayin.....
