15" driver for 2 way box suggestions
« on: September 10, 2019, 01:08:55 AM »

Can anyone suggest a good 15" for a 2 way ported box for me. They are 4.2cu feet with two(approx 3") ports that I could lengthen/shorten for tuning. Boxes have 1" RCF N3709 horn bells with RCF N481 drivers in them. They primarily will only see 100Hz and up used with subwoofers. Any other advise is welcome also.
Thanks

I don't know that HF unit, but the Beyma 15P80Nd is about as good as it gets for 15" midbass drivers. Efficient, and pretty flat into the kHz range.

That's a largish box for a two way.  Also, EAW used to cross that hf/horn combo at 3000hz in some of their cabinets.

Find a 15" with a very good extended upper bandwidth if you must, but I'd look to adding a midrange driver(and preferably on a horn flare) to add into the design.

Best regards,

John

What is the crossover frequency for the refrigerator? 60 Hz?
It's a good starting point, though most people end up adding about 35° of phase delay so that the overlap isn't too cold.

Depends if it's in a side by side or over/under configuration.

FWIW, the Beyma 15P80Nd is about as good as it gets for a 15" midbass. Efficient and flat into the kHz range.

Didn't see much info online about your HF drivers.

Yea they are older RCF 90deg horn bells EAW used them in a few boxes years ago. I got the bells and drivers NOS a few years ago for a good price and snagged them. The N482 uses the same diaphraghm as the 480 and 481 Im pretty sure think it is M59 or something(I forget).

Ill look up that beyma driver also.
Thanks

Eminence 3015 plus about 1 cu ft of styrofoam sheeting, then poly batting spray glued on to get the volume down round 3 cu ft.  Might need more port area.  Eminence has the specs on their site.

Hmm. Maybe this + a RCF horn and the new B&C dual driver as a 15" 3-way DIY?

The b&c I'm thinking about is a 2-way driver.
Just saw that Beyma has a suggested 2-way design for 15P80Nd with a TPL-150 HF.
Also interesting.

According to my old RCF catalog from pre Loud era the N481K used a phenolic diaphragm, while the 482 used a titanium version.
the phenolic diaphragm had higher power ratings ( 55 versus 30 W 100 hour IEC noise ).
By todays standard both drivers are probably not very good ( Still have two M59 left somewhere   :) )

Second problem you wll have: 4,2 cu ft cabinet volume is way to high for any modern 15" driver suitable for mid/low mid.
To big a volume will give you a little bit of bass extension at the cost of  seriously degraded low mid performance.
Internal resonances are another problem.

With all these caveats: I have used 18sound 15MB650 and 15ND730/15NMB420 with not too bad results together with 1" drivers, 15MB700 is probably something like an EV 15L on steroids, but I have never used it.

IMO any 15"/1" is too much of a compromise for professional use

15 , 8 or 10 and horn
Actually there is an airspace tube(chamber made of hard tubing) in these for a small mid driver.I had sealed it off to use as a two way. These were old eaw pm315 boxes I had gotten unloaded in good shape in a trade back awhile ago.I had cut the horn area out and installed these rcf horns and sealed the mid driver hole up stuck in whatever 15" pair I had and used um for cross wash monitors for awhile in a band system.
Was thinking if I built um up, I could have a compact pair of decent small system tops for a club setup.
So maybe a 3 way setup would be better?
