I did some more tests and you can certainly use the ampsim or the tubesim as well inserted on the vox channel. Don’t forget to disengage the cab sim though!

The key is to put eq after the compressor and really engage the compressor.

I found that putting the compressor at an 1:100 ratio rms detection and auto helped a lot. The reason being that you want consistency in your saturated sound. If you want some dynamics you need to lower the ratio to taste, but not too much or your distorted sound won’t be as smooth.

A week ago Sunday the group that we did said to the audience at one point "we don't usually sound this good, thank you to the sound company for making us sound good.

That makes it all worthwhile.  Congrats!

Doesn't Waves a plug-in for that? Abbey Road Walrus or something...if not, they should.

...off to sell my idea to Waves...

I double assigned the input to a normal vocal channel setup and then to a channel with the guitar amp effect inserted on that channel. I used that channel compressor set as a limiter and played with the drive levels. I used both the dry channel and the effected channel mixed together to taste.  I also configured 2 snippets to change from a delay effect in the effects slot to the Guitar amp effect in that same slot. This also included different routing for each effect and I then assigned those snippets to 2 user keys so I could quickly and easily jump to this in sound check and back out of it again and then be ready for it during the show.  It worked very well.

Thank you for all the suggestions and help.

At 1:28 you can hear the guitar amp effect using overdrive on his vocal. This was recorded on an iphone in a basketball arena, so forgive the quality, but it lets you know what can be done.

I just used it as a standard effect fed from an aux, returned to a stereo channel. It was laid over the original vocal and triggered with snippets.

Also, the big delay later was stereo ping-pong. Sounded much better in stereo! lol

Bullwinkle: This is the amplifier, which amplifies the sound. This is the Preamplifier which, of course, amplifies the pree's.
