2018 Mac Mini & Dante
« on: August 25, 2019, 04:54:14 PM »

Has anyone one had success or failure using the 2018 Mac Mini with Dante? I've puchased a pair with the built in 10G interface for my church and we can't get Dante going. I've not been the lead in trouble shooting but the person who is seems to have narrowed it down to PTP sync signals not getting though. AES 67 didn't work but AVB did. Dante did work on an USB-C adapter.

Any ideas or troubleshooting suggestions?

Thanks

See if these links will help you:

Did some more troubleshooting tonight.

The problem still occurs if the 2018 Mac Mini's internal interface is connected directly to a CL5 with no switch involved. This seems to me to rule out any sort switch config or IGMP snooping problem.

Even so I also verified that as noted in the linked Audinate note that "Forward All" is turned on for the ports on the switch where I want to have the computers hooked up. I have an IGMP v3 querier running on the Dante network.

Other things of note are the Dante Via isn't installed. Dante audio does flow but as the sync/clock packets are getting lost it drifts out of time. I believe it end up glitching at some point. We compared the routing table seen on the Mac Mini with the internal vs USB-C interface and when using the internal interface we didn't see an entry for the PTP sync signal at 224.0.1.129.

I haven't tried calling Audinate yet, any further suggestions before I go there?

What make and model switches are you using?
Are they approved for Dante?

Cisco SG300's

We used them for Dante with older Mac Mini's for many years but decided to upgrade computers.

But did you check this:

In my own tests I got the best results with the flow control turned off as well.

Yeesh. Just another reminder that DVS will never be as good as real Dante hardware.

Interesting.  So it appears that it is actually MORE reliable to use a dongle than to use the built-in ethernet port on a MBP.  Exactly the opposite of the protocol i've been following for years.

Good to know.

Did some more testing today. Verified the network settings mentioned in the post Robert linked to no effect. Also checked dropping from 64x64 all the way down to 2x2 as referenced in the Audinate FAQ linked by Andrew and still didn't get clock sync.

Contacted Audinate and got the following:

Ah okay. Well in case there is an issue with the 10Gbe ports, engineering should be testing those for the next DVS release. I'll check for any specific bug cases for the next release.

Oh well,

Thanks
