I ran across this video in which the Electric Power Research Institute and the Bonneville Power Administration conducted research into the behavior of arc flashes.

The tests were used to validate and refine mathematical models of arc flashing. Interestingly, they couldn't perform the tests to the degree where a person would be severely burned, because it would cause a disturbance on the power grid.
