A bit overloaded
« on: August 01, 2019, 01:50:01 PM »

This was yesterday just down the road from my house. Somehow, I never lost electricity, about 15,000 weren't so fortunate.

Remarkably, they did have it back on line 12 hours later.

What's crazy is that we had the exact same thing happen here in Madison about 10 days ago. Substation blew-up. The surge/impact to neighboring substations caused them to start on fire as well.

If the water stream is sufficiently broken (atomized), it shouldn't pose an electric shock risk to the firefighters.

Same as when I worked on a farm, and my city-slicker coworker took a leak on the electric fence. The foreman and I were watching -- we didn't stop him "in the interest of science" -- and were disappointed when he didn't yelp. I guess the water stream was sufficiently broken. Maybe we should have told him to stand closer.

There was a Mythbusters about that, sort of.  I think it was "How come you don't get electrocuted if you pee on the third rail of a subway."

Lots of things are flammable at arc temperatures (20,000° C, compared to the sun at 5500°C) including steel and copper, but what's burning in these pictures is the cooling oil in the transformers.

According to the FD, they used some type of solution to help put out the fire, and now there's concerns around it having run-off into our lakes... probably should've just used water. :o
