LOVE MY QU PAC !!!

One thing I really like about my QuPac is that I can throw an AB168 on it and get access to more channels (QuPac is 32 channels), and/or get I/O access across the stage with less clutter overall.  As Debbie noted, the QuPac sounds really good too.

A number of years ago (2006) a forum member posted a spreadsheet that was for a decent, passable "quick 'n dirty" bar band rig.  The price of entry for everything was right about $20k.

That spreadsheet has been updated over the years by several people, myself included.  The price of entry has not really changed, although technology and equipment quality has improved, arguably dramatically in some instances.  I recently updated it for folks looking for an all-in-one PA but with IEMs instead of wedges.

Have a look if you're interested.

I'm in the Minneapolis/St.Paul MN. metro area.

Hey Andy,

I am local to the cities, would be happy to show you some mics and talk things through with you at some point.

Thanks,
Matthias

If I were going to throw out a number for an entry level rig to cover most bases, $20k would be very realistic.

$5k mics, stands, cables, power distro, accessories, trunks
$5k foldback x8
$5k FOH console/stagebox setup
$5k PA Mains

You can flop the numbers around a bit but that seems like the ticket to ride on this train.

Seems a bit excessive to me.

$5k for a mixer seems high, even if you're counting iPads in there. How many channels do you really need? I do most of my gigs (including small festivals) on 16 channels*, which puts you in range of a small X32, Soundcraft Ui, QSC Touchmix, etc.

Most bands also won't need 8x wedges.

Chris

* Channel list:
4x vox
4x DI
4x Cabs
4x Drums
Which covers most things that can be thrown at you at this level. Of course, large festivals and touring acts might need more.

If you limit yourself to only doing "guitar" bands, maybe.  Horn bands usually are a 4 piece band with 3 vocalists ( who ALWAYS want "more me") and at least 2 horn players up front. Even if they share a couple mixes, you're still looking at 6-7 wedges in use and a spare in the truck.

Plus wedges are often needed to be employed as side fills etc.

On another note:

I think you're spot on about the mixer cost. And even if you really need more than 24 channels and are okay  mixing on a tablet, 32 channels can be done stage side for around $2k, depending what brand you favor.

Thanks Tim, Chris, and Scot!

It seems like what I really need to start, is gonna be
less than 20K.

This is a system not designed for rental purposes.
(but it’s always good to look ahead)

Several members have been kind, with offers to sell gear,
talk shop/advice, and let me try out equipment.

I am leaning towards QuPac mixer.

I am more up in the air on speakers.

Level one would be,
JTR Captivator 2 12 under Yamaha DZR 1  10’s
EV ETX-15SP under EV ETX-10P
JTR Captivator 2 12 under dB Ingénia IG4T
                             or
Bassboss SSP118-MKll  under Bassboss DV12
Danley THMini15 under Danley SM60M or FLX12
Meyer 750-LFC  under. Meyer Ultra-X40

I’m also up in the air on mics.
I like the Earthwork drum suggestions and the sticky
on vocal mics.

I’ve heard and used the EV speakers,a DSL 12 Mini sub,and
the Yamaha DSR line before and was impressed.

Not sure if making a leap from $1,500-2,000 speakers to
$3,000 and up speakers is worth it in my situation.

I’ll have to do more listening.
I’m also hesitant to go passive main route and match
power amp with DSP settings(?) to speakers. (i.e. Danley)

The (form factor?), ease of deployment, and the ability to
integrate the pieces into other systems are the main points
for me.(i.e. using tops and subs as monitors).

That kinda limits the appeal of the IG4T,DV12,and perhaps
the Ulta X40.

Recommendations:

1) Buy used. Wait for what you want to show up on the used market at a good price. You might have to scrub off some grime with a sponge, put a coat of paint on speaker cabinets, or turn a screwdriver from time to time - big deal.
2) Never pay full price for anything. Get a deal on whatever you buy, or don't buy it. Learn where the deals are -- events like Sweetwater GearFest, Parts Express Tent Sale, or places online like Reverb or eBay.
3) Only buy what you can pay cash on the spot for (don't buy it on credit unless you're okay with putting your finances in crisis to have a big stereo system that will never financially pull its weight.)
4) Try to hear it before you buy it, unless you like experimenting (and the work and expense that go with it). If no one else in your area is using something, then there's a risk that the reason for that is the product doesn't really work.
5) People are hiring you, not your gear (believe it or not). They want your agreeable demeanor, expertise, and know-how. If you can mix a band then that's icing on the cake. Your gear is there to be used and relied upon by you to deliver the service you were hired to do.

I like your JTR212 with DZR10 idea.....should be a great combo.  I have JTR212 with DSR112 and it's a rocking little system....very clean and loud.  I also like your Bassboss selection.  I heard this combo at a local demo last year and was really impressed.  Two of each of those tops and subs will set you back around $10k, but will sound great if you can swing it.
