Too many wall warts?
« on: June 19, 2019, 03:21:50 PM »

I just found this product. Looks like a solution to having so many transformer plugs. (Of course, your wireless setup is powered off a low voltage distro so you don't need this, right?)

These are really popular  for outfits with mobile device lockers (think people who do those roaming surveys with tablets on the street or ticket checking at arenas and the like). We had a few that powered all our RF scangun chargers (for about 120 scanguns in total) that lived in a couple locking cages at my old warehouse job.

I keep a bag of 1-foot extension cords around for this sort of thing. They're cheap and can be used everywhere. They are dubbed "wart removers".

Here's a solution from the install side, lots of DC devices that don't move much.  The (pricey) way to truly remove wall warts!

That's nice and clean. On the other hand it concentrates points of failure.

Wall warts are popular with manufacturers because it simplifies product design and approval. But WW are not very popular with customers.

Last century at my old day job , I designed a mega wall wart replacement, essentially a rack mount transformer with multiple isolated output windings that could replace something like 8 wall warts. This was not cheap and not embraced by the larger part of the market.

The customer is always right, and Peavey lost their love affair with wall warts last century, while I suspect they will never completely go away.

Many Power supplies have enough amperage to power 2 or 3 IEM transmitters or wireless mic receivers.  I use inexpensive power splitters.  Cuts down the number of warts/lumps in the first place.

I replaced over a dozen Sennheiser wireless unit power supplies with two larger bricks and a bunch of DC Y-cable splitters.

Hopefully this works well when combining multiple similar SKUs from the same manufacturer together. Without going too far into the weeds this can cause ground loop issues with simple unbalanced audio paths.

For Sennheiser wireless you can use ASA 214 / ASA 1; for their IEMs you can use the AC3 (or their new unit) which will combine both signal and power over BNC.

Kramer also makes this: VA-102P512 10-Port Dual Voltage DC Power Supply.
