DAC for stagebox
« on: June 14, 2019, 02:16:23 pm »

Attention Hive-mind,

I'm trying to use the AES outs on my Soundcraft SB32 so I can keep the 8 analog outs for monitors.
I need two 2ch or one 4ch DAC to convert from AES/EBU-in to analog-out to feed my mains, subs and fills.
I tried some Graham-Patton boxes but was underwhelmed by the noisiness and build quality.
I'm currently looking at the Henry Engineering D2A and the Sonifex RB-DAC1.
Does anyone have thoughts, opinions or suggestions for me?

Thanks, and Mix On!

Have a look at one of my old posts. There are some suggestions in there for gear.

Behringer DCX2496?

I have some old blank face Alto processors that would also do it, but no longer have a laptop that will load the obsolete GUI to set them up.

Back when I had a Soundcraft stagebox I bought a loudspeaker DSP (Lake LM26) with AES inputs.

The stagebox (and desk) have since moved on to new owners but I still have that DSP.

There's a lot of this on the broadcast side, but RDL also has a box:

I have a pair of the VERY good Apogee Mini-DACs. They're no longer made, but are stellar AES/SPDIF -> Analog DACs.
PM if interested, I can let them go for a good price.

The DBX Venue 360 will take two sets of AES input for a total of four channels.
Configure the output routing as needed.

The Behringer DC acts 2496 also includes AES inputs.

Its one of their better products

That's actually what I'm doing now, and it works great.
But I'm about to pull the trigger on some SM80s and a DNA amp to go with my TH118s.
It's a 4 channel amp, but only has one stereo AES in (grr).
