Electrocuted in bathtub
« on: June 13, 2019, 10:27:06 AM »

Yes, electrocuted while using a hair dryer in the bathtub.

JMS

A Russian star of international online poker, 26-year-old Lilya Novikova, has died of electrocution in her bath in Moscow, Russian media report.

An elderly neighbour found Novikova's body in the bath, after receiving an emergency call from Novikova's parents.

Her poker fans knew her as Lia. Reports suggest she suffered a fatal electric shock while using a hair dryer in the flat, where she lived with her parents.

She was well known on Twitch.tv, a live streaming channel for online gamers.

Russia's Investigative Committee (SK) confirmed she had been electrocuted. All the reports suggest that it was an accident.

The daily Moskovsky Komsomolets (MK) says the neighbour is a longstanding friend of Novikova's parents and has a key to the flat.

Surely it was a case of falling into the tub while using the dryer.  Even if, why did (assuming) the tube still have water in it? Slow drain?

Another life that could have been saved by RCD/GFCI.

Have not seen any reports saying she was found in the tub.
According to Casino .org

https://www.casino.org/news/poker-player-liliya-novikova-found-dead-from-suspected-electrocution

"Her parents became concerned when they were unable to reach her on the phone and asked a neighbour, who had keys to the apartment, to check on her. The neighbor found her body on the bathroom floor.

While a post-mortem has yet to be completed, investigators said the absence of signs of violence on Novikova’s body suggested her death was accidental. Preliminary checks on the body suggested signs of electric shock trauma.

She was believed to have been blow-drying her hair in the moments leading up to her death and reports have suggested the hairdryer may have been faulty. It’s believed she may have banged her head as a result of the electric shock."

Does anyone know if electrical code in Russia calls for an RCD/GFCI? I know nothing of how their electrical systems work there.

I don't think I've ever seen a type F outlet marked as having a GFCI. Though I've seen them with breakers on the same panel, but I'm not sure if that's there for switching the outlet on and off (like the type G outlets in the UK) or if they actually provide any ground fault protection. I don't see why they couldn't since there are traditional breakers that act like that available in multiple markets.

That link mentions her "body was found in the bathroom", but no mention of "tub" in either the headline or article about the unfortunate event.

Seems to be little information easily translated regarding whether GFCI use has been adopted in Russia, but my guess is there was not one in use on her hairdryer.

The description of the living quarters as a "flat" suggests the writer uses a UK version of English. If so, I think that "the bath" refers to the bathroom, not a bathtub.

I can't save lives in Russia, but i put several GFCI outlets in my casa in Hickory, MS. Mostly near plumbing that implies low Z path to ground.

My older original [1950s] bathroom in my house doesn't even have an outlet in it.  i was going to fix that.  now i'm thinking maybe i won't....

the newer bathroom [1980s] does have GFCI on a dedicated circuit.

The article you cite has a sensationalist headline attached to it and asserts it as fact in its first line.  It proceeds to cite "local media" but fails to identify the source.  It is directly refuted by other reports.  In Europe and many other regions, "in the bath" directly translates to "in the bathroom".  NOT "in the bathtub".

Syntax matters.  Context matters.  Detail matters.
