Lab Gruppen PLM 20000 a 2ohms
« on: June 04, 2019, 11:17:23 pm »

Hello,
I have 6 x 4 ohm double 18 subs 2400watt Program that I want to run off one PLM 20000.
Has anyone got experience with this amplifer running at 2 ohms?

Thanks

Justin

Uh... 3 4 ohm boxes in parallel is <2 ohms nominal.  At the impedance dip the amp will likely see a near-zero load and may go into protect.  It will also draw as much power as it can, trying to drive what it sees as a near short.

Lab Gruppen is now owned by Music Group/Tribe/Congress.  Ring up their CARE facility in Las Vegas and ask them what they think.

Sorry, my bad. the amp has 4 channels so 2 of the channels will be at 2 ohms.

There was a great amp review article a few years back, with Powersoft, Lab, and Linea Research amps.  The take away - don't run subs at 2 ohms unless you have Linea amps, plenty of wall power at higher than 120V, and super short/thick speaker cables.

Still, that 2 Ohm NOMINAL....
It will spend plenty of time under 2 ohms.
even if it works, what Caleb said is critical.
Personally, I wouldn't take the chance.

Thankyou.

I guess I could wire the subs and do 3 drivers per channel.
Or get 2 x PLMs

Are your subs bass reflex? - if so then the average impedance over a nominal operating range of 40 - 80 Hz will be quit high dropping to a minimum at the port tuning frequency to something near their DC resistance. In the mid band the impedance will be more like 30+ ohms.

The PLM20 is a very serious amp and should be capable of driving that load. The normal practice is to wire the subs (NL4) one driver pin 1+,1- and the other 2+,2- and then when you parallel 3 boxes you get 2 lots of 2.7 ohms, which in your case would be perfect.  This is what I do. FWIW In generally I try not to use 2 ohms on our Powersoft K10's ... but I have with success.

Ha, ha, that is rich. And do they really call it a CARE facility?

The subs may or may not be less than 4 ohms at some freq.

They could be a good bit higher.

It is important to look at the specific spec sheet and impedance curves to see where the REAL impedance load is.

Often the actual load may not be the "stated nominal" load.

Manufacturers only list 2, 4 8, 16 ohms, because anything else just confuses many customers.

If you list a loudspeaker having a 6 ohm impedance, for example, it can create lots of confusion with people about how to power it, since they can't find an amp that has a 6 ohm rating.

But rate the same loudspeaker at 4 ohms and now all of a sudden everybody "knows" how to power it.

Trust me, I've been there----------
