Funny how the $100 Art unit linked in this thread was called low-cost. This is a tool that will have many uses IMO.

That works, but it means that each mic output is louder depending on which speaker one is closer to.

It's for a weird situation where my band practices with middle school kids for an event we run and we aren't all in the path of both speakers.

Then crossing the cables as I suggested will work. Mic 1 into speaker 1's mic-level input. Speaker 1's XLR output to speaker 2's line-level input. Repeat with the numbers swapped.

It will work, but this does rely on the speakers being configured so that only the mic-level input is being passed through to the other speaker. If anyone accidentally pushes those buttons, there'll be trouble.

Doesn't work in the situation unfortunately, but we'll try looping through or I'll get a cheap mixer.

Don't need to do this again until the fall, so no rush.

Agreed, has many uses.  That's why I'd suggest finding a sub $30 mixer on Craigs List.
Twice I have purchased the Behringer Xynex with 2 XLR and 2 1/4" inputs on Craigs List (both times for less than $30). 
One I use on my desk for routing multiple audio sources into my desktop monitors.....and the other one my drummer uses to mix his IEMs and Sampler unit for his own mix.

Small channel mixers like that can be used for many 'small task' duties.
I prefer the Behringer to the ART because you at least have some Bass/Treble control.
