Hi.

I am getting an audio artifact or snapping sound in the left channel of 48k WAV recordings.

I attached a JPG of a waveform.

Anybody know what it is?

Recorder is Denon DN-300r.

Denon asked some questions, but didn't respond after I answered their questions.

I don't think I can switch to the DN-300r's XLR inputs.
(I don't think my amp has XLR outputs.)

The following troubleshooting eliminated the snapping sound:

1... Record at 44k 16bit instead of 48k 24bit.

2... Record with CD recorder instead of DN-300r.
(Cd recorder is HHB cdr-830... I assume this records 44k, 16-bit.)

2... Recording MP3 instead of WAV.
I'm not sure if this eliminated the snapping sound.

So it seems like the 48k is the problem?

The following troubleshooting didn't eliminate the snapping sound:

4... Turn off auto level.

5... Record to different USB flash drive.

6... Try different source.

7... Switching left / right on RCA splitter cable.

8... Try different RCA cable(s).

9... Try new RCA splitter from Lowes.

10... Try old gray RCA splitter.

11... Record from different mics.

12... Switch top and bottom RCA cables on amp.
(top = aux out
bottom = Bridging input/output)

13... I think there is a partially-cut wire going from amp into speaker connector screws.
I cut off the nicked part of the wire and reattached.

Did you hear that noise in the sound system at the same time it was being recorded?

It kind of sound like some digital data noise pick up, is there an access point or cell phone next to the recorder.

The first thing to determine is if the noise happening in the system before it even goes to the recorder.

I don't hear the snapping noise in the speakers.
The speakers are connected to the amp.

Monitor the recording using head phones plugged into the front of recorder and listen for the noise.

Ok, I just listened on headphones while recording.

It sounded good, except sounded like maybe some faint cellphone interference coming through the headphones.

But when I play the recorded file on my computer, the left channel has the snapping sound... It sounds totally different than what came through the headphones while recording.

On the input cables at the recorder swap them around, plug the cable going into the left into the right and the right cable into the left.

Make a recording and see if the noise is then on the right channel, if so then the noise is coming into the recorder, if the noise is still on the left then I would say it could be a recorder issue.

On your recent test recording were you recording what should be silence?

Thanks, I sorta tried that, but my source output is a single RCA, so I use an RCA splitter cable.  I tried putting the splitter at the source end and the recorder end.  And I switched cables and splitter ends.  And I tried different cables and a different splitter.  I still got the snapping sound in the left channel.

The recent test recording was not silence.  It was live voice like I normally record.
