JoeCoControl desktop app
« on: May 04, 2019, 02:17:57 AM »

So the Win/Mac Desktop control software for the JoeCo blackbox...
Where can I download it?
I’ve scoured the JoeCo site for it, and can’t find it.
It’s called JoeCoControl. Maybe it’s hidden somewhere on that site or elsewhere but I’ve searched and searched to no avail.

My understanding is that the iPad app JoeCoRemote won’t work without an extra peice of JoeCo hardware, but the Desktop app just works via USB...

All I want to do is monitor and label tracks without using that tiny interface!

I think at this point it might be your best option to contact the company. I don't see a link anywhere either and the manual doesn't say much about it.

I did. No reply.
Seems like they’re a company that likely will disappear soon.

That would be sad. I really wish all of the digital mixers with USB stick recording would study these guys. I had no trouble doing 24 channels of 24 bit to a USB2 stick writing at 5MB/s. Compare that to A&H, where only a handful of sticks are even recognized, and nothing with a write speed under 100 MB/s will record without errors. There was a visible buffer display that showed you if it was having trouble keeping up. If you power dropped while recording, it would run recovery and salvage the recording on reboot. So solid.

Still no reply and no download links anywhere. They’ll go the way of the receptors and CD players soon enough, methinks.

From looking at the JoeCo website, it appears that you have to register and log in to download the software, and you need a serial number to do so.  :-\

http://members.joeco.co.uk/register_usergroup.html

Try asking over on the GS: Remote Possibilities forum? There's a bunch of guys there that use the JoeCo recorders, maybe someone there has a copy they can email you.

ETA: Andrew, which JoeCo unit are you using? If it's the BlackBox range, how do you connect it to the computer? The USB port is the USB-A type, which is meant for connecting an hard drive to record to. There's no USB-B connection by which to connect the computer. The BlueBox interfaces have the USB-B port, though.

If you already have a user account, and are using the BlackBox, then probably they won't give you access to the JoeCo Control software because it's not capable of running with the BlackBox range.

Is that right? I thought I saw a USB-B connector on the device. Well then, it sounds like the only option is their Bluetooth or WiFi adapter, and I'm not about to buy one of those for someone else's box.

Think I'll stick with DVS.

Sad customer service from a niche company.

Can you imagine a console manufacturer not making their free offline software available on their website or making you enter the serial number of the console you were going to use just to get a copy?

I had a similarly frustrating experience with Evertz, trying to get a manual for a SPG. They did get back to me and they wanted my full address blah, blah but it was too late anyway. Luckily I'd already found the manual elsewhere.
It's a shame about JoeCo, I guess DVS hasn't helped their business much.

The JoeCo Black Box recorders and DVS aren't really the same thing. The JoeCo recorders are just that, hard disc (or now SSD) recorders that have a set of analog inputs, and passive pass throughs to fed a secondary back up recorder, without ever having to deal with a computer or a DAW. They are SUPER rock solid. And they are designed such that if the primary recorder has a power failure, the signal continues to pass through to the secondary recorder. Invaluable for location and live event recording.

DVS is just a virtual audio interface, that does no recording on it's own and needs a separate DAW and a computer to work on. And frankly it has some pretty serious stability and compatibility problems and I have lost faith in it as anything other than a secondary or back up recording solution.

The JoeCo BBR-64 Dante is an interesting solution which accommodates 64 channels of direct to disc recording via a Dante hardware connection. The price point is pretty steep (~$3,500) and you don't get a secondary Dante connection. The Tascam DA6400 is a similar solution that offers redundant Dante, but uses proprietary SSDs. And it costs about $1,100 more than the JoeCo.

Seems there are no perfect solutions in this industry.

I've been ogling the Sound Devices 970 since it came out.
Native 64ch MADI and Dante.
If I had a serious recording project, this looks like the best (read most expensive).

The SD970 won't record at 96k from Dante. Maybe that's important to you, maybe not. For those of us that do classical music recording, it is.
